Yellow Jackets Swamp Angola Hornets Under 93 To 65 Score Friday
The Decatur Yeljow Jackets hit their high water mark for the season Friday night as they swamped the Angola Hornets, 93-65, at the Decatur gym, for the Jackets’ 13th win of the season in 16 starts Both teams threw defense out the window most of the ball game in a race horse struggle, and both coaches used everybody on the bench, otherwise ■> the score conceivably could have been much higher. The rival quintets poured 50 points through the nets in the first quarter as both were hitting with amazing accuracy. Six Jacket* contributed to the scoring in the opening period, while the Hornets were led by Gary Griffith's 10 points as Decatur held a 29-21 advantage after the first eight minutes of play. W And the clubs let up only slightly in the second period as Decatur tallied 20 points to Angola's 15 and the Jackets went to the dressing room with a 49-36 bulge at the half. The Northern Indiana boys whittled away at the Decatur lead in the third period, and came within six points three times, at 52-46, 54-48 and 56-50, but the Jackets turned on the steam again and ' built their advantage up to 18 points at the end of the third quarter, 71-53. The final chapter was strictly no contest, with Decatur's lead varying from 20 points to the final 28-point margin. Eleven of the 12 players Bob Worthman used in the fray broke into the scoring column, with four of the regulars hitting double figures. Tony Kelly with 19, Gene Baxter 18, Bob Banks 17 and Larry Moses 12. Mike Erickson, however, topped all the scorers with 22 points for Angola, trailed closely by teammate Gary Griffith with 20. The Yellow Jackets will be on the road twice next week, playing at New Haven in a Northeastern Indiana conference game Tuesday night, and at Portland Friday night.
