1 > Last Os Marooned Trainmen Rescued Marooned Nearly Week In Mountain CHAMA, N. M. (UP) — Army crews and a helicopter pilot won a hard-fought battle against nature late Friday by rescuing the remaining trainmen marooned for almost a week on towering, snowcapped Cumbres Pass in thd southern Colorado rockies. Wide-tracked weasel snow vehicles brought down 27 of the stranded train crewmen, raising their total for the two-day rescue operation to 33. A*" helicopter, piloted by Capt. Robert Knowles, rescued 25—20 of them in shuttle flights Friday. Two of the men, T. D. Smith, 40. and Al Tafoya, 35, of Chama, got so “fed up” with waiting to be rescued that they walked 13 miles down the snow-banked pass to Chama. Twenty of the 60 snowbound railroaders became stranded Saturday atop the 10,022-foot pass. The other 40 were sent aboard two separate . trains to rescue them but they became snow-locked by 30foot drifts and slides at Coxo Station, some two miles short of their destination. All 60 of the stranded trainmen had ample food and warm quarters during their forced stay atop the pass. Van Buren Man Is Killed In Accident HUNTINGTON, Ind (W — Orville Kariger, 39, Van Buren, was killed Friday night when his automobile rammed the rear of another car on Ind. 221 four miles south of here. Police said Kariger was unable to stop when he came upon the other car-over the crest of a hill. The other car was driven by Melvin Hoover, 67, Huntington, who was unhurt. 14th Garment Factory Fire Victim Dies NEW HAVEN, Conn.ffl — 14th person died today of bums, received in the Jan. 24 garment factory fire. Mrs. Anna Jobes, 57, died in k hospital. Three other victims of the fire died Friday. Two of the 30 persons injured were still in critical condition. SOME RURAL (Caattaaeg rro— fayr O—> ticular farm, and that since each 80, 100, or 120-acre farm would have a different evaluation, depending on improvements and property there, the overall increase or decrease would show the trend. 75 INJURED (Ceauaae4 era— rawe Ones had arrived there—"all dead or dying." An unconfirmed report said there was one survivor. French press reports said three planes were involved in the crash, but police said they knew of only two. TENSIONS (CoatinaeU trom Page One) task of setting up machinery to keep the peace. The assembly scheduled two sessions for today, and planned on an all-day session Sunday if necessary to reach a vote. The assembly hbpes to adjourn Feb. 23. OPERATION 4C— tinged from Page one) is provided for a nominal cost by the pool superintendents. X life guard is, of course, always bn duty when swimming is permitted. The biggest single expense for the pool was the 1,300,000 gallons of fresh, clean water which were pumped through the pool last summer at a cost of $1,649.93. Os this, SIOO was paid from the park fund, and the rest donated through the water department fund. Personnel from the light, street and water department donated S2OO worth of labor to preparing the pool for opening, and closing it in the fall. Chlorine, added to the water to insure its cleanliness, and rinst! for the feet before and after bathing, added also.to the post;, of .pool maintenance. Very careful records of each addition to the pool water is kept, and this record is checked weekly by the state department of health. Samples of pool water are taken regularly, and tested. The total cost, including all labor, salaries, water, lights, and even including two new diving boards purchased this year, was just $4,053.26 for the 28,994 swims. During summer months many shoppers leave their children at the pool to swim while they do their shopping. Many stop there for a cooling swim themselves after doing their weekly marketing. -e—If you hara sometmag to sell Oi rooms tor rent, try a Democrat Want Ad. It brings results.
Articles Aid Taxpayers In Making Tax Returns
Editor’s Note: This is the last of series es articles to help taxpayers in making out their federal income tax returns. . By RUBSELL C. HARRINGTON Commissioner of Internal Revenue Written for United Press WASHINGTON (UP) - Income when you are sick or injured, income from dividends, and pension or annuity policy income are all subjects which continue to give taxpayers trouble in filing their federal income tax returns. In this final article I shall try to answer the most frequent questions. Sickness and injury: Accident or health insurance payments, and amounts you receive as compensation for your injury or sickness, are exempt from tax. Sick Pay: You may exclude from your income up to SIOO a week of pay you receive under a plan which continues your wages while you are absent from work because bt injury or illness. There are special rules which show up in the following examples; If you are sick at home for seven days or less, the pay you receive may not be excluded from your income. It is fully taxable unless you are hospitalized at, least one day of your sickness. If . you are hospittalized for at least one day, you may exclude the entire amount of pay you receive during your period of sickness, up to the limit of SIOO per week, whether you are sick for less than a week or for many weeks. If you are sick at home for more than a week without ever being hospitalized, the pay you receive i after the first week may be exDimi is

eluded from your income — onefifth of Vour weekly pay; opesixth (but not more than $16.67) if you are on aisix-day week. If you are absent from work because of injury, hospitalized or not, your pay for the entire time may be left out of your income ' when you are calculating your tax; again, up to the SIOO weekly limit. If you make any claims under ; these provisions, be sure to attach . a statement to your return to support the claim. Dividends: The law allows you . to exclude the first SSO (or less) of dividends you received during . the year. It also allows you a [ credit against your tax, up to 4 . per cent of the amount of dividends above SSO. Generally i speaking, these rules apply to dividends paid ! on the common and preferred f stock of U.S. corporations. They , do not apply to so-called “divi- . dends” paid on withdrawable sav- > Ings accounts at savings and loan associations, mutual savings banks t or the like. Veterans Administration dividends on GI life insurance . policies are not considered income [ for tax purposes. i U.S. Savings Bonds: If you rei port your income on the cash ; basis, you do not have to pay tax on the interest until you receive it. '■ In the case of “E” bonds, that is : not until you cash them in, and then you lump the interest in with the rest of your income and pay the tax due on the total. Retirement Pay and Annuities: You owe no federal income tax at all on social security benefits, railroad retirement act pensions, ’ veterans pensions, benefits to families of veterans, or disability pay esi ir
to military personnel who have retired. Provisions for other kinds of retirement income are somewhat like those for dividends: You need not pay tax on part of it and you may be able to claim a tax credit for some of the amount you do pay tax on. Your need not be retired .to enjoy these tax benefits, but in some cases you must be 65 or older. Generally speaking, any contributions you made towards a pension through the years you were working comes back to you tax free. On the other hand, if your employer footed the bills, you are taxable for the payments as you receive them now. However, if you paid taxes on the contributions as he was making them to your pension fund, or if you paid part of the cost, you may now receive tax free the portion you paid in or paid taxes on. Those are the general rules for pension or annuity income for which you are not taxable. The law also provides rules for the amounts on which you do pay tax. Under certain conditions, it allows you a credit against your tax. The credit is 20 per cent of your retirement income, up to $240 per person. Here again are several points which bear repeating. File your return as early as you can. The deadline is midnight, April 15. Be sure you have figured your tax correctly, and have looked into all the angles which may apply to you and may give you a lower tax. Our job is to ’collect every cent of tax which is owed, but no more. Late filing or errors can make it necessary to charge you interest or penalties. If you need more assistance, call on your Internal Revenue Service. If you have something to sell or rooms for rent, try * Democrat Want Ad. It brings results.
