BOOK REVIEW The Ten Commandments, by A. Powell De vies, New American Library of World Literature, Inc., re-tells the story of Moses and the migration of the Hebrews from Egypt, and analytes the meaning of The Ten Commandments throughout the course of history from early times to the present day. Hats off to the man a little better than his word, a little more liberal than his promise, and more generous in deed than speech. Go To Phil L. Macklin & Co. for Prom nt. Courteous Service

========= I or Creamed Comments on the Sunday School Lesson, The Warning and Invitation of Jesus, Matt. 11:-20-30, for Sunday, February 10. This lesson shows the danger of failing to respond to Christ’s invitation and the disciplines and rewards of those who become Christians. Human history abounds with manifestations of God’s loving kindness toward humanity, but there has been a wide difference in the way his mercies have been received. Thr hav always bn those who rejected fellowship with God. and those who have accorded God a whole-hearted reception. This lesson gives evidence of these two reactions. Vs. 20-22. "Then began he to upbraid the cities wherein most of his mighty works were done, because they repented not: . . . Woe unto thee, Cborazin! woe unto three Bethsaida! for if the mighty works which were done in you, had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes, . . . But I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for Tjnre and Sidon at the day of judgment, than for you.” There was excitement because of Jesus’ deeds, but there had not been the response to his spiritual messages, due partly to the opposition of the religious leaders. One’s built guilt is measured by his opportunity to know righteous- , ness. Tyre and Sidon knew little except the promptings of evil human nature, so they are judged more leniently than, the cities /which had opportunity to hear Christ’s message and become his followers, and did not respond. Vs. 23. 24. “And thou, Capernaum, which art exalted unto heaven, shalt be brought down to hell: for if the might works, which should have been done in thee, had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day . . , But I say unto you, That it shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom -in the day of judgment, than tor thee.” Copernaum had been' Christ’s second home, and the headquarters of his Galilean ministry. It could have become elevated’ to an exalted position, if it had accepted his message, but since it rejected Christ, it was more degraded than Sodom, which had not had such high privilege. Christ judged cities as be judged individuals, by their moral qualities and spiritual- attitudes. Vs. 25, 26. “At that time Jesus answered and said, I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because thou Mist hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes , , . Even so, Father: for so it seemed good fa thy sight.” The “wise and prudent” mentioned in this verse refer to the proud and haughty scribes inn Israel; the “b*es" wet* the unlearned disciples who had the humility and receptiveness of mind to be taught. God makes know the secrets of his infinite wisdom to those who sincerely and humbly try to learn the will of God. “Only the wise could be pious,” according to current opinion then, but Christ conformed to God’s will that he was to be revealed to all who would lay aside their pretensions and become as little children. V. 27. “All things are delivered unto me of my Father: and no man knoweth. the Son, but the Father: neither knoweth any man the Father, save the Son, and he to whomsoever the Son will reveal him.” God’s supreme revelation was made in Jesus Christ. Those who have accepted Christ have found and understood God. God Maced human destiny in Christ’s hands. He is the Saviour of the

world and the potential saviour of every human beirg in the world* Christ revealed Gc2 to us, but the nature of Christ’s person remains a mystery. This mystery should only fill ua with reverence for him. Vs. 28, 29. 30. "Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest . , . Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls . . . For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” A yoke does not necessarily add to one’s burden, but can provide a means of bearing one’s burdens. Quist’s yoke involves his teachings' to aid us in dealing with our problems. As one accept! and follows these teachings, oae achieves a rest of the soul, in the assurance that all is well.
