Scarlet Fever Not Severe Disease Now Assurances Given By State Officials INDIANAPOLIS (UP)—A flurry of outbreaks of scarlet fever around Indiana has brought assurance from state health officials that there’s really nothing to worry about. Dr. Albert R. Marshall, head of the communicable disease division of the Indiana State Health Board, said fear of scarlet fever is based largely on the memory of older Hoosiers who recall it used to be quite a dread disease. "A good deal of confusion exists in the minds o fthe public," Mar shall said, "because the older folk remember the severe cases of 25 to 30 years ago. Little Skin Bash “The scarlet fever organism has undergone a change in the last 25 or 30 years, because the disease is not as severe now. There is very little skin rash. The patient still has a bad sore throat and a fever like a streptococcic infection. "But beginning in 1937 we began to use sulfa drugs which were very effective. Now we have penicillin and the ‘wonder drugs’ so there are no longer the serious complications — sinus infections, ear infections and mastoid infections.” Marshall said an American Public Health Association handbook recommends only isolation of the patient and not restriction of contacts. A revised Indiana communicable disease code of regulations dated 1952 permits local health officers to quarantine contacts under 16 years of age for a week following exposure. But most health spokesmen do not advocate quarantine. Cites Case In Point Marshall recalled that a year ago a school of 500 pupils in Indiana had 30 to 35 cases of scarlet fever in one week. Patrons clamored to close the school to prevent the outbreak from spreading. Instead, school officials bought a couple bottles of a drug in tablet form and gave pupils regular doses for three days while classes continued as usual. There were no more cases of scarlet fever in that school, Marshall said. Incomplete figures in the state health board’s records division indicate about a 50 per cent increase in scarlet fever incidence thus far in 1957. There were 158 cases reported up to Jan. 19, compared with 108 at the same time a year jago. a, —-r.:.- .7. Outbreaks were reported weekend in Hancock and Shelby counties but .local physicians expressed little concern because cases were mild and effectively controlled. ASKS PROBE (Co»tl»«ie* Pane O—> No Ax to Grind Meanwhile, Governor Handley said he has “no ax to grind” on Indiana’s mental health programone of the hottest issues during his predecessor’s term. Washington Township Farm Bureau Meets The Washington township Farm Bureau will have its first meeting of the year Thursday at 7:30 at the Farm Bureau Co-op building at Monroe. All members are urged to attend. Harvey Lehman, county Farm Bureau chairman, will be the speaker. Also planned on the program are the showing of pictures. Door prizes will be awarded for adults and children and refreshments will be served. ' NEW WITNESS (OoetlaeeO tro» r»a» O—> orgy. Instead, the findings of Dr. Walter Camp, state toxicologist, showed the girls apparently died about five hours after they left their home to attend an Elvis Presley movie Dec. 28. Carrip’s report was based on tests of food particles found in Barbara’s stomach. The foods were the same the girls’ mother, Mrs. Loretta Grimes, served her daughters the night they disappeared. Mrs. Grimes, who appeared at the hearing to “protect their honor,” said Patricia had eaten little that night, which could account for the lack of food particles in her stomach. The findings blasted the signed confession of Bennie (The Dishwasher) Bedwell, 21, who said he and a man named “Frank” toured dingy skid row bars and cheap hotels with the girls for a week before dumping their bodies into a snow-filled ditch Jan. 13. Other features of the program wiH be a half-hour audience participation program to be led by Dr. Theodore Hoelty-Nickel, head of the music department of Valparaiso University, and musical entertainment by a jazz band composed of 18 Decatur high school students.
