To Ask Wilson Explain Charge On Guardsmen House Committee Opens Hearings On Problems Monday WASHINGTON (UP) — Rep. Overton Brooks (D-La) said today he will invite Defense Secretary Charles E. Wilson to explain his charge that the National Guard was a' “draft-dodging business’* during the Korean war. Brooks, whose Armed Services subcommittee starts hearings Monday on National Guard reserve problems, told * reporter he would ask Wilson to give the subcommittee the “benefit of his studies and his convictions.” “Apparently he has convictions,” Brooks said. Wilson told the House Armed Services Committee Monday that he thought that the Guard became “sort of a scandal” during the Korean war. He said youths joined the Guard to avoid being drafted for combat duty in Korea. Starts Furor The statement started a furor across the nation. But Wilson stuck to his guns Tuesday when queried by newsmen at the White House after a visit to the President. He said he knew of “no reason to apologize." “If any one thinks I am against the Nationpl Guard, of course they are wrong,” he added. “I’m trying to get the National Guard efficient and trained." Angry National Guardsmen, state legislatures, and members of Congress continued to fill the air with resolutions, telegrams and statements demanding that Wilson resign or apologize. The Georgia Senate adopted a resolution demanding that President Eisenhower fire the defense chief. The South Carolina House of Representatives branded Wilson’s statement as "insult” to that state. Governors Joint Attack A resolution calling on Wilson to apologize cleared the Rhode Is*, land Senate but was stalled in the House. Several governors joined in the attack. Some sample comrtient: Gov. Frank Clement of Tennessee said he would try to shift his Army reserve commission to the National Guard “to show my faith” in the Guard. Gov. James E. Folsom of Alabama said the Alabama Guard went into federal service “100 per cent” during the Korean conflict. He said Wilson should apologize. Sen. Herman Talmadge (D-Ga) said Wilson had demonstrated again that he has “the worst case of foot-in-mouth disease in Washington.” • it you flare sometnmg to mu oj rooms tor rent, try a Democra’ Want Ad. Closing Service Os Youth Week Sunday Final Service On . Sunday Afternoon A complete program for the closing service of the observance of Youth Week in Decatur, under sponsorship of Decatur Associated churches, was announced today by the committee in charge. The final phase of the week of observation will be held at the First Presbyterian church Sunday afternoon, starting at 4 o’clock. All young people of junior and senior high school age are invited to attend. Theme of the meeting is "Consider Your Call." Following is the program order: Call to worship — Judy Lane. Scripture lesson — Besty Burk and Ann Kocher. Prayer — Gloria Fugat. Offering — Alicia Levy. Message — Stanley Kirkpatirck. Song leader will be the Rev. Gerald Gerig, pastor of First Missionary church, and the organist will be Miss Kaye Wynn. Pianist will be Jerry Kaehr. Special music will be presented by the Misses Cecelia and Cynthia Lehman. Ushers will include Larry Moser, Bill Smith, Ted Schrock and Duane Agler. Casualty Rate Is High Among Shows Sponsored On TV NEW YORK CITY — (Special) — The season’s casualty rate among television shows has hit the highest mid-season mark history of the medium, to this week's “Variety", business publication. Fifteen to]F rated shows have already or soon will lose their sponsorship. They include "High Finance”, "Ford Star Jubilee”, “Eddie Fisher Show”, “Herb Shriner Show*, Walter Winchell Show”, “Can Do”, “Crusader", “Stanley”, "Noah’s Ark", “The Brothers”, “Ding Dong School”, “Giant Step”, “National Bowling Time”, and “Hiram Holiday”. “Big Top” and “My Friend Flicka” have lost their sponsors, but will continue for a time on a sustaining basis. Another tremendous problem that the live telecasts have to cope with this season, is the appearance on the net-wkorks of feature films from the major producing companies. When outstanding pre--1948 film hits such as “Wizard of Oz” or "30 Seconds Over Tokyo” have been presented the great majority of the viewing audience neglected the live show for the superior movie* entertainment and completed wrecking the ratings of the TV produced programs. Geneva Institute Postponed Tuesday The Geneva farmer’s institute was called off Tuesday because of the icy roads, it was reported by ' county agent Leo N. Seltenright. - No new date has been-set, but it will probably be next week, it was learned here.
