murder were returned Thursday by an Allen County grand jury against Richard E. Kiefer. 36, a truck mechanic accused of killing his wife and 5-year-old daughter with a hammer and hunting knife. Kiefer gave himself up two days after the bodies of his wife. Pearl, 34, and their daughter, Dorothy, were found’in the basement of the Kiefer home. Atomic Merchant Shipping Planned Government Opening Long Range Program WASHINGTON (UP) — The government is opening a long range program aimed at developing "commercially competitive” atomic merchant ships. « The program — to be carried out jointly by the Atomic Energy Commission and the Maritime Administration — will be in addition to project of building the world’s President , Eisenhower’s current first atomic - powered merchant vessel. That vessel, a combination pas-senger-cargo ship, will be valuable from the research and demonstration viewpoint. But it will not be able to compete with coal and oil-burning vessels from the standpoint of operating costs. Mr. Eisenhower has ordered fullspeed ahead on building the vessel as a dramatic illustration to the world of this country’s interest in peaceful uses of the atom. The hope is that it can be completed in about three years. The new program — announced Thursday night — will be directed primarily in its initial stages at least toward developing more es ficient types of nuclear reactors—or engines — which could be used in the merchant snip of the future
