Yellow Jackets Wallop Huntington, 87 To 63; Commodores Defeated
YELLOW JACKETS The Decatur* Yellow Jackets, working and moving at their best for some time, gaye their, hometown fans a real offensive treat Tuesday night as they walloped the Huntington Vikings, 87-63, oh the Decatur hardwood. - It was the ninth victory in a dozen starts for the Jackets, and the ninth setback for the Vikings in 14 ball games. Charlie Johnson, Huntington center and a son of Harold Johnson, Huntington principal and former Berne coach, hit from the corner to open the ganle and give the Vikings a momentary lead, the only time they were close to the Jackets. Stan Kirkpatrick evened the score seconds later with a pair of free throws and Tony Kelly hit the first of his 10 field goals and the Jackets were off and running. Decatur built its lead to 10-2 before Huntington scored again, a free throw by Dick Chalfant. The Jackets kept right on moving and had established a 12-point bulge at the end of the first quarter, 208, with Kirkpatrick contributing exactly hall his team’s points. Huntington played the Jackets on practically even terms throughout the second period, and the quintets went to the dressing rooms for the half-time rest and lecture with Decatur holding a 3724 advantage. \ The Jackets at one time in the third period had increased their lead to 19 points, which the Viking reduced to 16 points as the quarter ended, 57-41. Bob Worthman’s boys kept the game well under control throughout thei final chapter, rfnd both coaches emptied their benches in the closing minutes. Kelly and Kirkpatrick each scored 22 points to lead the scoring for both teams, eight of Stan’s points coming on free throws in as many attempts from the foul stripe. Gene Baxter, with 12, and Bob Banks, with 10, were other Jackets in double figures. Evansville Reitz 58, Princeton 55 Zollner Pistons May Move Team To Detroit In 1957 BOSTON (W — The owner of th'e Fort Wayne Pistons of the National Association said Tuesday he has been exploring the possibility of shifting his franchise to Detroit next season. Fred Zollner said attendance at Fort Wayne has fallen off this year and the switch to the Motor City “looked good.’’ If the Pistons go to Detroit, they will play their games in the Detroit Olympia. COMMODORES After a good first quarter which saw the Decatur Catholic Oommodores leading 22 to 13, poor foul shooting and rebounding combined to give the Willshire Beatcats a 71-70 squeak-in victory at the Willshire gym Tuesday night. Decatur Catholic opened the scoring in the first quarter, and took an early 4-1 lead. Excellent shooting saw the Commodores pull away from the Bearcats, to lead 22-13 at the quarter. A general slowdown by the Commodores on retriving* rebounds allowed the Bearcats to drive within four points of the green-and-gold team, 39-35, at the half. Both teams missed more than 50 percent of their foul shots. The third quarter opened with several exchange of baskets, and then the Willshire team, controlling the rebounds under the Commodore basket, began to catch up. With 2:54 left in the quarter, Hey hit a long shot and tied the score at 49 all. Seventeen seconds later Huffman scored another basket, and the Bearcats the lead, 51-49. An exchange of baskets and several jump balls closed out the quarter, with Willshirg leading, Y Tor'4o 'seconds of the fourth quarter the two teams shot and missed, racing pell-mell from one end of the midget floor to the other. Then Krueckeberg hit two points for Willshire, to move the Bearcats four points ahead. Kable hit a basket, and then Hey tipped one in, to keep the four-point margin. Kable missed a foubshot, and Tom Meyer then scored two points for Decatur Catholic. Krueckeberg was fouled by Kable, and hit one of two shots. His second shot was tipped in, and Willshire pulled away, 60-55. The Commodores quickly scored again, and a foul shot by Kable moved them three points up the ladder, to trail 6058. Ron Meyer tipped in a shot, and knotted the score at 60-all. The score was tied again at 62-all, and then Willshire moved away, 6761 on a shot and three free throws. With 57 seconds remaining, the Bearcats led, 69-64. Kable was fouled by Huffman, and made both shots to keep the Commodores in the game, 69-66. Tom Meyer closed the gap 69*68. Two free throws by Willshire with 11 seconds left made the score 71-68. Kable hit one, and with barely a second left in the game a foul was called against the Commodores. When the buzzer blew, with the score 71-70, the crowd ahd teams left the floor, but minutes later Merkle of the Bearcats was called back from the showers to try for a free throw. Kable and Tom Myer tied for high point honors with 24 each. Hey scored 23 points for the .winners, and Marbaugh ana Krueckeberg scored 19 each. Gorillas Beat Pennville Last Night, 54-44 The Hartford Gorillas, bouncing back from their first defeat of the season last Saturday night ix the county tourney finals, returned to the victory trail with a 54-44 triumph over the Pennville Bulldogs Tuesday night at the Pennville gym. The Gorillas were out in front at all stopping points, 11-8, 21-11, and 36-28. Dean Stahly, with 16 points, half of them on free throws, and Roger Moser, with 15, led the Hartford victory.
