Have you purchacsd your 1957 auto license plates? Time’s a wasting and the first thing you know you’ll be standing in an al: most endless line kicking yourself for not having shopped earlier. Remember, you must have your November tax receipt. o o Don't forget, during these cold days, to throw out a few bread crumbs for the birds. They arc our little feathered friends, who eat up the insects during the summer so we can have tomatoes, cucumbers, other vegetables and flowers in the summer. Eating for them in the winter gets pretty* slim unless we all throw out a few crumbs. ——o——o— Next big basketball event in Adams county will be the sectional basketball tourney. If you are not now a regular subscriber to the Daily Democrat, and enjdy following high school and other sports, you're missing a lot. The only daily newspaper in Adams county brings you all the local, state and national news, plus pic- ‘ .. tures of local events and at the lowest annual rate of any daily newspaper in this area. —o Newspaper carriers have a tough job these days. Most of these young business men have long routes and they carry their papers in all sorts of weather, without much complaining. They receive a good lesson in life by weathering all types of delivery problems. It is no wonder that 95 percent of them grow up to be successful in all walks of life. We are proud of our "little merchants and we are confident that their training, while rugged at times, pays good dividends in better citizens. ,—-o—<>■.—Cigarettes are sneaking back on the popularity list, and are showing gains in sales. The throat cancer scare apparently has died down. Filter cigarettes also are g&ining in popularity. People are becoming brave again and gambling that cancer won’t strike them. Probably there always will be those who prefer to take a chance with their lives and continue to use the cigarette. Cancer researchers also continue to

advise against over-indulgence in smoking. About the only thing tobacco men have been able to prove with their filter brands is that they're a poor substitute for the real thing. • o o— — Highways, made dangerous by ice and snow have tended to slow drivers down to a crawl and the resu.lt the last several days has been fat less mishaps. We don’t particularly like the weather, but we certainly are glad it is good for something. —o—o Here in Indiana, we have a few hot days in the summer, and some cold days in the winter and also we have some rainy, slushy spring weather, but day for day, we believe the Hoosier state has more ideal days of weather — any state in the Union. We’re glad we are fortunate enough to live here and it reminds us of Bill Herschel’s poem, “A’int God Good To Indiana.” o——o ! The biggest problem to face members of the Indiana General Assembly will be the proposed 790 million dollar budget. The requests ofr the next two years have established a new record, and this is in the face of a drop in the general fund budget of some 38 million dollars in the last two years. Governor Craig certainly will be long remembered as a great spender. Next in interest is the proposed Right to Work legislation, bitterly opposed by . many Labor Leaders. All in all it promises to be art interesting 61 plus days. o o Turbulent times appear ahead throughout the Southland over desegregation of white and Negro men, women and children. Perhaps it isn’t as easy, in the southern states, as we are inclined to think, here, where we don’t have the problem. There is one thing certain. Desegregation is the law of the land, and if we fail to observe it, we are law violators. Perhaps the Southern citizenry feels that if it becomes ( unpopular throughout the nation, it may meet the same fate as did prohibition. We, here in the midwest should be glad that we do not have the problem.
