New Record Is Sei In Sale Os Bibles Over Eight Million Sold In Post Year WASHINGTON tUPJ-Americans bought more than eight million copies of the Holy Bible last year —a new record for the best selling book in history. ' Publishers report that 1956 sales of the Scriptures were up about 10 per cent from 1955, the previous record year. They attributed the increase to growing public interest in religion. The King James version easily held its place as the popular favorite. Its total sales, estimated by publishers at more than six million complete editions, far outstripped the sales of all other translations combined. In second place, with sales nudging the million mark, was the i New Revised Standard version.
published in 1952 under the sponsorship of the National Council of Churches. Thomas Nelson and Sons, publishers of the RSV, said 1956 sales climbed about 20 per cent, indicating a steady growth in popular acceptance. A committee of 32 famous scholars spent 15 years preparing the Revised Standud rersion. their aim was Jo* produce a “readable” -Bible in the language ot today and to eliminate some of the misunderstandings which have resulted from changes in the accepted meanings of many English words since the King James version was translated nearly four centuries ago. Publishers estimated 1956 sales of other Bible translations as follows: Douay Versum tthe standard Bible for American Catholics), 750,000; Jewish Bibles, 70,000; modern translations, including Moffatt and Goodspeed, about 25,000. w If you bar* sometmng to sell ox room* for rent, try a Democrat Want Ad.
