High Meat Prices Forecast This Year Drop In Production Os Meat Predicted . 1 WASHINGTON (W — The Agri- , r culture Department said today , I consumers will pay higher prices , . for pork and possibly higher ; , grades of bapf this year than dur- ; ing 1956. ’ Total 1957 meat production is ■ 5 expected to be less than the 1956 ■ record# the4d»partment said in its j publicatiotL* "The Livestock and , Meat Situation.” Production prob- - ably will be cut heaviest in the • first half of the year, with most . of the redtfction in pork. i The department said farm prices . of hogs, which had advanced $2.50 > r per 100 pounds in late December t from their mid-November low, , > may strengthen somewhat more . • this winter. A downturn is probable when > marketings from the fall pig crop I are largest. A new seasonal up- • turn, however, is likely in the spring. Prices of hogs during mofct • of 1957 likely will be above 1956. : : The price situation for both consumers and producers stems from the supply of hogs. The 1956 fall pig crop was down 4 percent, and ' producers planned Dec. 1 to re- ( duce the spring crop 2 percent. , ’ This indicates that hog slaughter ; during most of all of 1957 will re- ■ . mam below 1956. The department . i said that by year’s end, the differ- . i ence will be small. 4 Hie department said farm pri- J , ces for cattle in 1957 will remain ‘ close to those of a year ago. Cat- , tie slaughter has been extremely , large; because many cattle were ’ put on feed early and marketed I 4 rapidly after only moderate feed- ‘ i ing. Also the rate of marketing ( for young cattle was speeded, in ; contrast with delayed marketing j ! last winter, and lack of feed fore- . •ed larger marketings from i drought areas.
