< Gun Permit Sought \ By Till Defendant ) Threats Reported ‘ By One Defendant f INDIANOLA, Miss. (UP) - A defendant in the Emmett Till murder case has tried in vain to get a gun permit because of threats on his life since' the publicized case in 1955, a sheriff said today. Sheriff E.W. Williams of Supflower County verified a report published in "Look ’ magazine to- ’ day that J.W. Milam, one of two men acquitted of slaying TUI, has sought permission to arm himself. Milam and his half-brother, Roy ; Bryant, were accused of kidnaping ; and slaying the 14-year-old Negro - boy from Chicago because, it was ' claimed, young Till insulted Bryant’s wife with a "wolf whistle." I ... Look quoted Milam as saying his life has been threatened frequently since he and Bryant were acquitted of a murder charge in a Jury trial at Sumner. Miss., in September, 1955. Williams said he discovered Milam ’was “carrying a gun” and made him stop. "I told him no one had a right to carry a gun without a permit,” Williams said. "He told me his life had been threatened but I told him I had been threatened once or twice myself. "I didn’t see that he was in any danger.” Williams said there had been an "incident or two” in Sunflower County involving Milam since he began farming near Doddsville. The sheriff did not say wtot he meant by “incidenti’’ ‘ K t Look'said white people who had flocked to Milam's and Bryant's defense during their trial had since' turned against them . Geiger Resigns As - Toll Road Chairman Says Resignation Given In November INDIANAPOLIS (UP)-Dr. DUlon Geiger of Bloomington, chairman of the Indiana Toll Road Commission, said today he handed his resignation to Governor Craig last November and hopes it will be accepted “real quick.” Geiger, who is Craig's personal physician, said he informed Craig of his plans Nov. 15, the day the East-West toll road was dedicated. Authoritative spokesmen for Craig said the governor plans to accept Geiger’s resignation in a few days and to appoint former Indiana Appellate Court Judge John A.. Kendall of Danville as Geiger’s successor. Another of the four commissioners said he “wants to resign" but has not done so and doesn't know when he will. However, it appeared quite possible that John Steele, Jr„ Brazil, might quit and allow Craig to name his successor before Craig’s term as governor expires next Monday. “1 have not tendered my resignation,” Stelle told the United Press by telephone from his home at Brazil, “but I do want to resign.” He said he wants to deVote full time to his business and definitely plans to quit before his term expires July 1, 1958.
Geiger also gave personal business as his reason for wanting to get off the commission. His term expires July 1, 1959, Resignations of two of the four commission members this week would permit Craig, a Republican party factional rival-of Gov.-eleCt Harold Handley, to fill the vacancies with friends or associates. Geiger said when he Joined the commission originally in Craig's administration he agreed to serve only until the east-west superhighway. was finished. There are hundreds of types of castings, he explained. but the Decatur plant produces only gray iron castings up to about 100 pounds in weight The important thing in casting is the tensile strength of the finished product;, this has been increased greatly in the past 30 years. •~T — ’ ~

Then sand-and-oil cores are placed in the sand mold, and white-hot metal is added. 32>e gray iron castings are gray because they contain graphite. Ordinary castings have flakes of graphite, but a new special process greatly increases the strength' of the metal by changing the tiny particles of graphite to spheres. Harry "L.
