Geologist Credited In Smashing Racket Testimony Aided To Obtain Indictment PITTSBURGH (UP)—A bookish geologist who raises flowers in his ] spare time won credit from the government today for helping indict racketeers for whom he had stolen valuable Gulf Oil Corp, survey maps. U.S. Attorney D. Malcolm Anderson said without the testimony of bespectacled Thomas Smith, 47, a trusted Gulf employe for 25 years, it would have beeft impossible to build a case against four men. Smith, who was fired by Gulf last January, showed up at the local federal building Thursday carrying a book entitled “Optical Crystalography.” He was reported to have related to the 19-member grand jury his' role in the fantastic • swindle. The maps he admitted pilfering from Gulf pinpointed loca- - tions of potential. oil reserves worth millions of dollars. Smith, a '-lifelong resident of Pittsburgh, and John Marvin Leivia/ an Orange, Tex. geologist, were named -as co-conspirators in the fantastic theft but were spared indictment because they had cooperated with the government by testifying. ~ , . ' ■ ~ Indictments were returned against Odie Seagraves, 70-year-old Houston, Tex. wildcatter who' spent a colorful" half century in the oil business; Edward Lieberman. 30, a carpet company executive and his brother, Emanuel, both of New York, and Irving Milner, a fugitive in Canada. > 0 County Agent's Column o : n A 20 percent reduction in feed costs for brood sows is possible now by feeding corn silage. Pur-due/-research has shown, county agent Leo Seltehright reported today. Feeding of good quality corn silage, 1.5 pounds of high quality ) protein supplement and minerals resulted in costs savings and an increase of up to 2 pigs per sow at, farrowing, and up to 1.3 more pigs are litter at weaning. Seltenright stated that Adams county farthers have not yet .generally tried this new feeding plan, although hog farmers in other counties have been quite successful with it. Farmers who desire more information may write to agricultural publications office, Purdue university for any of the following pamphlets: A. H. 151, “Corn Silage as a Feed for Brood Sows;” A. H. 152, "Sell Feeding Rations Containing Ground Corn Cobs for Bred Gilts;” A. H. 180; “Amount of Protein Supplement Required for Sows Fed on Com Silage During Gestation;” and A. H. 181, “A Comparison of Ground Corn Cobs and Alfalfa Meal for Self-Feeding Bred Gilts.”

Face Penalties For Entering Red China Departments Study Cases Os Three Men WASHINGTON (tPI — T h r e e American newsmen who slipped into Red China illegally could face heavy fines, imprisonment and loss of other privileges, government officials said today. The State and Treasury departments already are considering whether banking and other accounts of the newsmen should be frozen. This would mean that their families, for example, could not draw on bank accounts while the newsmen are in Red China. Government legal officers are determining possible legal actions which might be taken against the newsmen. When they do come home, their passports may he seized—an action that could bar any foreign travel for an indefinite period.
