Our Preacher Says: "It is the season of Christmas, the season when we strengthen our faith in God and man, and look again to the future and to the light and warmth and security it holds for those who remember and practice the teachings of the Man of God. who brought to the world the greatest Light of aU, many years ago.” Jesus seized upon divine love and made it the cornerstone of His > religious teaching. Creamed Comments on the Sunday School Lesson, The New Heaven and Earth, Rev. 21:8; 22-27; for Sunday, December 30. — The Rev. D. Carl Yoder. This lesson seeks to show that ultimately the good will triumph over evil and that God will realize his purposes for the world. It is an ideal lesson with which to end the year’s study and confront the challenge of a new year. The Christian hope rests on something far more substantial than beautiful imagery. There is a basic moral principle written deeply into the structure of the universe, which declares that unrighteousness carries within itself the seeds of its own destruction, and, that when men are powerless to overcome evil, God intervenes and can be trusted to express his omnipotence. V. 1. "And I saw a new heaven and a new, earth; for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea." The word “new” means a new quality in something that previously existed. Life is a struggle from what is to what ought to be. Man is divin- | ly dissatisfied with things as they are and eternally hopeful that some day he will be able to live a better life on a better earth. The "sea” refers to the barriers making perfection impossible. V. 2. "And J John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.” Unlike Rome, personified as a harlot dressed in scarlet, the new Jerusalem is depicted as a pure bride adorned for her bridegroom, the heavenly Christ. V. 3. “And I heard a great voice i out of heaven, saying, Behold, i the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God.” The contirrthMSpurposejnf God is to dwell among I men? Human. personafity«ha|l be i iiresbryjOlC Fthe DiClne' ' ■ V. 4. “And God shW.wipe away 1 all tears from their eyqs; ana ' there shall be norngje deatk, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain; for the former things are passed away.” In contrast to the persecutions, sufferings and even death the early Christiahs suffered, in this new age, under God, these martyrs will experience no more suffering or pain. The causes that produce tears will be removed. V. “And he that sat upon the throne said, Behold, I make all things new. And he said unto me, Write: for these words are true and faithful.” The endorsement of John’s message by the Almighty should be convincing. Vs. 6,7, "And he said unto me, It is done. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give unto him that is athirst of the water of life freely ... He that overcometh shall inherit all things; and I will be his God, and he shall be my son.” God is the creator, the beginning (Alpha), and since man's final destiny rests in God's hands, he is the end (Omega). The "water of life” means complete spiritual satisfaction. In the eternal order, God gives freely of life and all good things when man has faith in God And fellowship with his son, Jesus ‘■Christ. V. 8. "But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone; which is the second death.” In contrast to the

Vs. 22, 23. “And I saw no temple therein; for the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are the temple of it. . . And the city had no need of the sun, .neither of the moon, to shine in it: for the glory of God did lighten it, and the Lamb is the light thereof.” There will be no need for a temple, since the new heaven is an eternal holy of Jjplies, eternally lighted by God’s glory, with no need of sun or moon. Vs, 24, 25. "And the nations of them which are saved shall walk in the light of it; and the kings of the earth do bring their glory and honour into it . . . And the gates of it shall not be shut at all by day; for there shall be no light there.” The new haven will be an eternal empire quite in- f dependent of the usual trappings of earthly power, a place secure from evil, free from the darkness of perplexity, doubt and ignorance. All things shall be brought to fight. Vs. 26, 27. “And they shall bring the glory and honour of the na- , tions into it . . . And there shall in no wise enter into it anything that defileth . . .” Those written in ’ the Lamb’s Book of Life are those , whose lives are a quest for right- . eousness, overcoming temptation. ; &s| I ’ Discussion Questions on the Sunday School-Lesson, The New Heaven and Earth, for Sunday, De- , j cember 30. 11. In Germany, an Evangelical Church official called on the youth of Berlin to take charge of maintaining the city’s 113,000 Jewish graves. The university, which has a current enrallment of 2,200 students, is said to be the world's largest Lutheran educational instution. It is operated by the Lutheran QiurchMissouri Synod. Christmas was named sometime in the middle of the 4th century, and the word has been traced backe to A.D. 336. OriginaUy, according to the Roman calendar, which was inaugurated by Julius Caesar in 45 8.C., December 25th marked the -winter solstice - Although December 25 has been the date of the Christmas celebration since the end of the 4th century, it has not always been approved by aU churches, communities, or governments as a day of merry festival. The Puritans of England regarded such celebration with disfavor, and because they dominated the Parliament in 1644, Christmas celebrations were forbidden at that time. Even the shops were compelled to remain open on December 25. In America in 1659, the Massachusetts General Court, reflecting the Puritan thought, made Christmas festivities a penal offense.
