or fails to take on the matter would bear hyavily on the state’s efforts to live within a record multi-miUion-dollnr budget. The gross tax, Indiana’s biggest revenue source, accounts for about a third of staje collections. x One lawntaker estimated “chiselers” cost the state "25 per cent" of the gross tax. Another estimated the loss at 5 to 6 million
[dollars a year. Republic's were 28-? l in favor of employer withholding. Demo--1 crats were for it nearly 80 per ■ cent. Split On Tax Hike On an increase in the gross tax, the survey showed 31 for. 27 against and 10 in the indefinite category. A 25 per cent increase has been mentioned frequently. The present rate for wage earners, after an exemption of SI,OOO, is 1 per cent. Lawmakers voted 40-17 against replacihg this tax with a net income leyy. 1 At this point, a sales tax as a new source of seems unpopular. Only nine lawmakers—eight of them Republicans—were in favor. The ninth did not identify his party. "Some new taxes will have to be enacted.” one legislator said. But 51 lawmakers said a sales tax was not the answer. Others commented: the state’s present tax system is "most ineffective,” Indiana should "take out the inequities of the gross income tax,” and gross taxes "should be withheld, if We still have this tax after 1957.” "Every taxpayer should be tax minded," said one lawmaker. "All tax should be on top of the table.” Said another: "Abolish the local property tax with a 6 per cent ndl income tax . . . abolish the gross income tax." This way, he said, “Indiana’s financial problems would be over.” Farmers Tax Guide Is Now Available The 1956 farmers guide is available j mow from the county extension office in Decatur, announced Leo N. Seltenrighti county agricultural agent. The guide is designed to be of use in computing income and self-employ-ment taxes for farmers.
