Parker Refuses To Sign lion Contract DETROIT (UP) —Detroit Lions Coach Buddy Parker left the board of directors feeling like Ed Meadows had tackled each and every one of them. Parker, one of the most successful coaches in the business, refused to sigh a contract for 1957. Neither he nor Lions President Edwin J. Anderson would elaborate. Anderson said the directors offered Parker a new contract, portedly a two-year pact at $30,000. But Anderson would not say why Parker wouldn’t accept it. Parker said he was not resigning, that he would stay with the club until his present contract runs out, Doc 31 But that only left the officials more up in the air and asking “What happened?” Anderson said the board "undoubtedly” would meet again before Dec. 31. But again, he would not say when. Parker and Anderson were as close - mouthed Thursday as they were talkative after Sunday’s loss to the Chicago Bears. Then Parker threatened to quit professional football because of what he termed a disastrous trend" that was making football a “slugging match” instead of a game. The threat stemmed from the incident in the Lions-Bears game in which Meadows tackled Bobby Layne and the Detroit quarterback wound up with a brain concussion. Later, Detroit movies of the game showed Layne was not “slugged” as Anderson contended but that Meadows had tackled him clean and hard.

North Carolina Barely Misses First Defeat By TIM MOKIARTY United Press Sports Writer North Carolina’s southern genlembn from the sidewalks of New York remained unbeaten today, but they’re hoping northern hospitality improves tonight when their road show shifts to Boston Garden. The tainted TJarheels run into a dangerous Dartmouth team at Boston after New York University almost spoiled their debut before the “home folks” Thursday night at Madison Square Garden. Although most of their players grew dp and learned their basketball in New York, the Tarheels suffered a surprising case of “Gardenitis” in the opener of a threegame northern tour but recovered in time to gain a 64-59 victory over NYU. NYU appeared headed towards a maior upset by pulling to within one point (58-57) of North Carolina in the final two minutes. However, the Violets fouled continually to gain possession of the ball and, in effect, gave the game away. Ramsey High Scorer Bob Cunningham scored 16 points for North Carolina but NYU's Cal Ramsey had 24. Meanwhile, LaSalle ruined North Carolina State’s opener of a twogame northern tour with a late rally that earned the Explorers an 83-76 victory at Philadelphia. Tom Garberina scored 30 points for the Explorers. In the only other game involving a top-ranked team, Minnesota handed eighth-rated Kansas State its first defeat, 80-72, despite a 33point performance by the Wildcats’ Jack Paar. Elsewhere, Villanova used a tight zone defense to upset Indiana, 79-69; Joe Bernardi’s last second basket gave lona a 64-63 victory over St. Bonaventure; Bradley solved Wisconsin’s zone defense early and went on to beat the Badgers, 74-62; Paul Neumann’s 26 points paced touring Stanford to a 73-67 triumph over Centenary ; South Carolina downed Georgia Tech, 90-83, as Grady Wallace tallied 37 points; Wake Forest upset Alabama, 73-50, and Junior Born’s free throw enabled Tulsa to edge Detroit, 75-74. SMU Meets Kentucky Three of the nation's top 10 teams will compete in the opening round of the University of Kentucky Invitation Tournament tonight. Fifth-ranked Southern Methodist plays the host Wildcats, while third-ranked Illinois faces Dayton, the beatefi finalist in last season’s National Invitation Tournament. In the University of Cincinnati Tournament, Fordham squares off against Miami (Ohio) and the host Bearcats play George Washington in opening round games. Fourth-ranked Sa»> Francisco, which has suffered three straight defeats on its current tour, visits Washington (Mo.), while ninthranked St. Louis entertains Baylor, Syracuse meets Holy Cross at Boston, Missouri visits UCLA, Brigham Young hosts Bowling Green, and South Carolina visits Georgia. « Traffic Violation Charged To Youth Donald A.
