SCHOOL REPORTER — AC’H S-- . - Trees — oh yes. trees! The commerce department has one on the will that’s rather unusual, besides the “art” typing of reindeer and other Christmasy portraits done of typewriter symbols. Miss Madge Cornett’s typing I class of juniors have on their green tannenbaum, decorations with their names attached. The higher the pupil S's ornament is on the tree, the higher his typing rate is on five-minute time tests, with a five word penalty for each error. A sign below the trunk of the tree queries, “Who will put the star on the tip top?” Doing just that was Alice Beer of John Truth's section, who was champion with 55 correct worths per minute. -A.C.H.S.Has anything been left out? Gifts! Oh. yes, the traditional giftgiving the 42 seniors were relieved to find their graduation pictures waiting for them Tuesday afternoon. In time for Christmas! was the overall relieved comment, while looks at the pictures showed a definite improvement over the proofs they received several weeks ago. After the rush of picture exchanges, the next topic of the seniors’ hour will be ordering name cards and graduation invitations. -A.C.H.S.— So mucfl for specific Christmastime happenings here at Central. The whole atmosphere has breathed of holiday, for. in addition, there has been carol siriging over the intercom system at noontime, completing the theme of Christmas music. Another part of that
atmosphere not mentioned yet is the creche in the junior high part of the east-west corridor. The waist-high manger scene, With a shepherd, the kings, and the Holy Family, stood in real straw under the wooden stable arch. —A.C.H.S.— Again a holiday season and — almost! —a year are summed up. and so this is "thirty” for '56; the Reporter will be here in '57 on January 10. It's time now, though, for “Merry Christmases” and ‘'Happy New Years” all around, and may our readers find thein both truly wonderful. —A.C.H.S — DECATUB CATAOLIL HIGH By Marjorie Kohne

Paced by Ron Meyer, versatile center of the Commodores, ; with 24 points, the Commodores easily vanquished Marion Bennett. The first half was evenly played, but the Commodores' •
fighting spirit overwhelmed the Marion team to come through with a 74 to 51 victory. , The Commodores in the second half displayed excellent defense that well might plague marly an opponent in the coming games. AU the Commodores showed action, and outplayed the Marion team throughout the entire game. This now boosts the Commodores to a A to 1 standing. Keep up the fine record, boys! — DCHS . Has everybody seen the new jackets the varsity team have been sporting at the games? They are green and yeUow checkered with short sleeves and C-O-M-M-O-D-O-R-E-S speUed on the back, which makes them easy on the eyes. The jackets really make the team look snappier than ever. Hope they don't >wear out too soon! — DCHS — Rah, Rah, Rah, three cheers for the seconds, as they came home with a victory Friday night. All the second team members played excellent ball from high-point man, Dave Shultz, to Mike EUenberger, who did a nice job of defense. DCHS is proud of you. Keep up the good work! — DCHS — The junior high team, called the Pirates, lost to Berne Thursday. Although it was another defeat for them, they did not feel too bad as they came through winners last Saturday. This was another C.Y.O. trophy. Nice going, Pirates! — DCHS — Curious eyes were found wandering over the sacristy in church. Guess whose they were? The sophomores of course. Those sophomores seem to have a knack of finding things out and asking questions. That is exactly what happened on Friday. The sophomores class went to the sacrist? and examined vestments and articles the priest uses for mass. The sophomores profited much from that short visit to the church and sacristy. — DCHS — Sophomores have been working very diligently on an essay, “Christmas, Around the Globe.” Many facts have been discovered, written, and discussed. They acquired much information from this assignment. By the way, did you know that the custom of using the Christmas tree originated in Germany? • — DCHS — Our shorthand experts, Elizabeth Miller and Margaret Ulman, received certificates of merit for transcribing dictation of 80 words s? minute taken for five minutes. Janice Titus and Ruth Lengerich were also given certificates for speed of 80 words a minute for three minutes. Watch out for these girls as they are tops in

their work. I - DCHS - “O Little Town of Bethlehem,” “Come AU Ye Faithful.” “We Wish You a Merry Christmas,” and “Holy Night” were just a few of the songs the DCHS glee club sang at the hospital Thursday after school. DCHS carolers enjoyed singing the carols and hoped they gave many of the people the Christmas spirit. - DCHS ~ What's aU the commotion? You might know it’s the seniors—what is it this time? Well, they have received their pictures and that is something to rejoice about. How many of you wUI receive your Christmas gifts from the seniors? - "DCHS — Wednesday the students held their monthly S.S.C, meeting at which time the prefect and viceprefect spoke on sodality rules and the wise use of leisure time. Some of the seniors then presented thought for meditation on Christ’s mass at Christmas. There were then committee reports and a talk given by Father Contant. - DCHS — It’s now time to check up on our junior typists. It looks like Rosaline Voglewede leads the class with 48 words per minute, which is a perfect one minute writing. OK, juniors, keep those lingers flying. - DCHS - That was a wonderful time we school reporters had Tuesday evening when Miss Gwen Hityard, our advisor, entertained us. I Wish to express my appreciation to Miss Hilyard and to the Democrat. We were treated to a neaff Christmas dinner-party, and a good time afterwards. — DCHS — The Christmas spirit grips us as the students walk into every classroom. The unique way in which each room is trimmed portrays the Christmas spirit. Cheers and congratulations must be given the freshmen for their beautiful and original work in their home room and bulletin board on third floor. In their home room, a crib of Bethlehem is the center of attraction. The message it sends out is, “Come, let us adore Him.” — DCHS — Christmas—The Birthday of Our Lord. A time to rejoice for school will be out for a week and four days. A time also when the entire family gets together to spend the holidays. But let us not forget what is sai4 in the first sentence for that is what Christmas realty ty. A time to have a worthy gift ready for Our Dear Lord. Keep this in mind. And so DCHS wants to wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. See you next year! DECATUR HIGH SCHOOL By Ellen Welch

Well, the inevitable has happened. The Decatur Yellow Jackets have been beaten. Yes, last Friday night in' the D.H.S. gym, the Elwood Panthers edged our Jackets by a score of SO - 58.
It was a nip youlß It was a nip and tuck battle all the way, with first one team on top and then the other. The highest lead that either team had during the game was five points, with Elwood having a five point lead once and Decatur taking the lead by five points twice. The rest of the lead by five points twice. The rest of the scoring during the game was so close that the final results of the game could have just as easily turned out the other way. But the wrong team just happened to be. on top when that final whistle blew and the Jackets were defeated by two points, which they hope to gain back against Columbia City tomorrow night.
—DHB.— To “tort of soften*’ the Jacket* second team beat the Elwood second team by a score of 38-36. This was also a close games and also a very well-played one. The D.H.S. second team now has a 5-1 record, of which they should be very proud. Copgrat’s second team, let's keep up the good work. —D.H.S.— Last Monday evening. December 17. the Decatur F.F.A.
