President Os Detroit Asks Player Barred DETROIT (UP)—Edwin J. Anderson, Detroit Lions president, 1 has asked that defensive end Ed Meadows of the Western Division champion Chicago Bears be barred 1 from professional football “for life." In a letter to National Football League Commissioner Bert Bell, Anderson asked Bell Monday to ban Meadows and fine “the club, , the coaches and the players on the team for committing such an of- ' sense.” Anderson said Meadows “deliberately racked up" the Lions’ ace ; quarterback Bobby Layne early .in the title game Sunday in Chicago and Anderson further charged ; that Meadows’ action was “pre- ' meditated.” Layne suffered a brain concussion from the tackle but no penalty was called. Meadows later was : ejected from the game for slugging one of the Detroit players. But in Chicago, Meadows said Anderson’s accusation was “a lot of baloney.” Meadows said that he did not know whether or not Layne had handed off the ball. “What was I supposed to do,” Meadows asked, “stop and ask someone if Layne still had the ball*” George Halas, owner of the Bears, called Anderson "a damn liar.” But, when informed of Halas’ comment, Anderson said that “the record speaks for itself. "When Meadows was with Pittsburgh last year he put Layne out of action. He has a bad history,” the Lions president said. Anderson' said his complaint wasn’t “sour grapes” because the Bears had walloped the Lions, 38-21, for the title. He said that before the game a Dr. Roth, who said he was the Bears’ team doctor, told him that Layne would not last seven minutes—that the Bears were out to “get” him. Anderson said he had witnesses to the conversation. San Francisco Winning Skein Halted Monday By JOHN GRIFFIN United Press Sports Writer San Francisco’s oft’V postponed date with disaster has come at last after a fantastic two years and one week. After avoiding defeat through a record 60 straight games stretching way back to Dec. 11, 1954, San Francisco’s Dons reached the end of the victory trail Monday night in a “no excuse” 62-33 debacle against Illinois at Champaign, 111. “We just didn’t play a good game and that’s all there is to it," admitted Dons’ Coach Phil Woolpert after the lopsided Illini triumph. The clash between the Illini, ranked No. 3 in the nation, and San Francisco, rated No. 4, was strictly no contest from the opening whistle. Illinois reeled off eight straight pointe before San Francisco scored. In fact, the game was three minutes old before the Dons could get off a shot. Illini Never Headed At halftime, the Illini led, 31-15, and they boosted that to 22 points at 39-17 within four minutes. The victors reached their Widest margin, 32 points, at 60-28 shortly before the end. Six-eight George Bonsalle paced Illinois with 19 points and Don Ohl added 14. San Francisco, shorn of injured high scorer Gene Brown, was led by Al Dunbar with 12 points. Iq the course of rolling up 60 straight victories since bowing to UCLA 47-40, on that hardly - remembered occasion two years ago, the Dons smashed every winning record in the book and captured two straight national college championships. It was the fourth win for unbeaten Illinois, but North Carolina, the nation’s No. 2 team, stayed a jump ahead by gaining its fifth victory, 70-61, over Maryland. The Tar Heels opened up a 40-26 halftime lead and. breezed home, although ace Lenny Rosenbluth was outscored by Maryland's Bob O’Brien, 29-26. St. Joseph’s Advances Monday night also saw the first round of the pre-holiday Carrousel Tournament at Charlotte, N.C. Title choice St. Joseph’s (Pa.) drubbed Davidson, 89-64, as Kurt Englebert fired in 36 points. Wake Forest, Florida, and Auburn also scored first-round wins to, advance to tonight’s semi-finals. In other leading games Monday night: Defending Big Ten champ lowa ripped Loyola of the South, 80-65, despite 28 points by 6-5 Pete Gatidin; John Richter and Bob Seitz had 26 each for North Carolina State in a 90-73 romp over Eastern Kentucky; Bob Plump's 29 points led Butler to an 83-79 overtime win over Michigan St.; Don Smid t’ s 24
