fourth in the nation with a total of 296,546,000 bushels. The Hoosier state also ranked 11th jn estimated wheat production with a yield of 35,580,000 bushels and 6th in estimated burley tobacco production with a yield of 12.775,000 pounds. The 1956 estimated corn production was 20,410,000 bushels below last year's* final total and 61,617,000 bushels below the Iftyear average. Estimated wheat production was 1,186,000 bhshels below the 19K5
figure and only 25,000 bushels below the 10-year average Nationally, the corn yield was estimated at 45.4 bushels an acre, compared with 40.6 bushels - in 1955. Therefore, since Stevenson carried Alabama, the total electoral vote Monday should have been: Eisenhower-Nixon—4s7; StevensonKefauver—74. But loss of Turner’s vote means Stevenson gets only 73. The defection took the Alabama electors by surprise. Chairman Ben F. Ray commented that “this is just a routine meeting,” and" Turner thought to himself, he said later, "Yeah, that's what you think! Turner then crossed out the names of Stevenson and Kefauver on the prepared voting slips and wrote the names of Circuit Judge Walter B. Jones and Talmadge for president and vice president /
