Movie Assailed By Cardinal Spellman Unprecedented Blast Mode From Pulpit NEW YORK (UP)—Francis Cardinal Spellman, in ah unprecedented attack on a motion picture from the pulpit of St. Patrick’s Cathedral, exhorted Catholics Sunday not to see "Baby Doll” under the “pain of sin.” The cardinal-archbishop of New York underlined the gravity of his condemnation’ by delivering it in person from the pulpit, midway through a solemn mass at which he was presiding. "The revolting theme of this picture,” he said, "and the brazen advertising promoting it, constitute a contemptuous defiance of the natural law, the observance of which has been the source of strength in our. national life. It is astonishing and deplorable that such an immoral motion picture has received a certificate of approval under the so-called, selfregulatory system of the Motion Picture Association of America.” The Catholic Legion of Decency had condemned the Tennessee Williams story as “morally repellent" and accused it of “carnal suggestiveness and unmitigated emphasis on lust.” , The Motion Picture Assn, and Warner Brothers, distributors of “Baby Doll” which has its premiere in New York Tuesday night, both declined comment on the prelate’s statement.
