Our Preacher Says: The power at God 1* at work in us. jf we do not interfere. It de- . mands that we do our part: then, quietly and miraculously God does the rest. We eat; the power of God puts the food to work. We sleep; the power of God restores our energies. In countless ways God works in us, if we will cooperate. We trust the power of our bodies to their work. If we are tense are anxious, we lack faith and interfere with God s work. We were made for divine partnership. We have our work to do and God has His.

- u ’i Hifr— x Creamed Comments on the Sunday School Lesson, The World Became Flesh, John 1:1-18, for Sunday, December 23rd. — The Rev. D. Carl Yoder. The observance of Christmas rose out of man’s hunger for a Saviour who was both human and divine. The yearning desire of worshipers to experience the mercy and love of God was answered in The story of the nativity. The coming of Christ was like a magnet let down to earth drawing to itself the unrealized hopes of the ages. The purpose of the lesson is to show that in Jesus, God oame to earth, and through Him men have the power to become the sons of God. Vs. 1. 2. “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God. and the Word was God. . I The same was in the beginning with God." The “Word’’ was defined as the Divine Reason, which as the agent of God, created the universe, and became a creative force. This creative force which had been with God since the beginning became flesh in the person of Jesus Christ. V. 3. “All things were made by Him; and without him was not anything made that was made.” God made a new beginning in creation and established a new humanity in Jesus Christ to supplant the old sinful humanity born of Adam. God was the originator of creation, but works through the Son. Vs. 4, 5. “In Him was life; and the life was the light of men . . . And the light shineth in the darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.” The “light Os men” apparently refers to the superior intelligence of man as distinguished from beasts, and sets man apart as being of divine likeness. Darlmess is a symbol of moral evil. Christ came as the light to blot out darkness. Light and darkness can not dwell together. Vs. 6. 7, 8. ‘There was a man sent from God, whose name was John . . The same came for a witness, to bear witness - of the Light, that att fnen through hun mightbelieve* He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light.” The mission of John the Baptist was to prepare the way for Christ and his ministry. Some remained. faithful tp John the Baptist and did not accept Jesus, in spite of John’s rejection of such allegiance. Vs. 9, 10, 11. “That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world ... He was in the world and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not . . . He came into his own and his own received him not.” Being the Creator of the world, he inhabited it, but the creation did not recognize its Creator. Christ came to bring light to all men of all time. Christ deals with each man as an individual in terms of his specific personal endowment. Christ as the true Light is to men what the sun is to i the earth, the source of all light, warmth, energy, beauty and growth, V. 12. “But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name.” From earliest times there were men who received God in faith. The conditions of becoming sons of God are for men to receive and believe. History is made up of the receivers and the rejectors. V. 13. "Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, I nor of the will of man. but ofi God.” Man’s sonship to God comes i not from his birth, his ancestry, I nor any human faculty or power, 1 but comfcs from God. Sons of God are reckoned by their faith and ac-l - ■/. f

ceptance of Christ at their Saviour. a t V. 14, “And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father) full of grace and truth.” i Christ th* Son, who had always existed in a purely spiritual condition, became a real man, taking upon himself everything necessary to true humanity. The greatest fact of history is that th# Son of Got became the Son of Man. 1 V. 15. “John bare witness of } him, and cried, saying. This is ho of whom I spake: He that comoth after me is preferred before me; ' for he was before me.” John gave witness as a prophet, and as a messenger preparing the way for the greater messenger. John was older than Jesus but Jesus ranks > above John who recognized the pre-existence of Jesus before he came to earth. ) Vs. 16, 17. “And of his fullness have we all received, and grace for grace . . . For the law was i given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.” We : receive grace according to our needs and our faith. God manifested himself through Moses, giving the people the Law.; He also spoke through the prophets; but through Christ there was made possible a closeness of fellowship with men, by his personalizing grace and truth.
