Rate Illinois Favorite To Win Big Ten CHICAGO (UP) — Big Ten basketball coaches rate Illinois practically a shoo-in for the conference title Ulis year with Indiana and Minnesota the major challengers, but so far Ohio State has showed promise of upsetting the dope long before the season ends. The mini, who finished second to lowa last season, drew acclaim from the league’s tutors because of height apd experience with lanky George BonSalle, perhaps the standout of the loop, at center, and Don Ohl, Harv Schmidt and Billy • Altenberger back to furnish capable and experienced support. But Indiana too has a "big man*’ in center Archie Dees and experience with Hallie Bryant, Jerry Thompson, Charlie Hodson and Pete Obremsky. Minnesota, though lacking height, has overall balance J W QUICK SNACK THAT fl HITS THE SPOT! | \ F,BH I V an< l 111 \ FRENCH FRIES | U WIN-RAE f DRIVE-IN I) 516 N. 13th

and the experience furnished by 14 of the 17-man squad last year. Buckeyes Are Unbeaten A fourth team the coaches rated as perhaps a title challenger was Northwestern. The Wildcats won mention on the basis of their sophomores, and so far three of them, Joe Ruklick, Nick Mantis and Phil Warren, have carried the club to two wins in four starts, equalling the total number of victories a year ago during the entire season. Ohio State was rated a "middle of the ladder” team, but the Buckeyes so far ate unbeaten against good competition and Frank Howard, Jim Laughlin and Ken Sidle could keep the assault rolling. The rest of the league wasn’t expected to figure in the title chase, except that as usual some of the underdogs will turn back the pacemakers some time during the campaign. Last year Northwestern tripped Illinois in the last game of the season for its only conference victory of the year. lowa Lost Its Starters Michigan State, Purdue, lowa, Wisconsin and Michigan have been unsuccessful already and showed little promise of great improvement Wisconsin probably will be the weakest Badger group in Bud Foster’s coaching tenure, and Buck O’Connor at lowa believed his team would be "unpredictable” after the loss of all five starters* and seven players overall from last year’s title winners. Michigan’s Bill Perigo expected his club to be stronger on the boards this season, but planned to rely on sophomores as much as possible with veteran Rpn Kramer his key map. Both Kramer and Purdue’s Lamar Lundy, expected to keep the Boilermakers going, have to work out of their football muscles to become effective, and Purdue too will have to get a good job from its sophomores to climb to the first division, Michigan State has good height and rebounding, and some experience, but lacks a center and outstanding scorers. "We’ve had feelers from Louisville and Milwaukee—but then again we to leave "Fort Wayne qpless we have to.” “I don’t want to move and Fred Zollner doesn’t want to move, but we may be forced to,” Eckman said. He said home attendance has averaged Club officials figure they need 4,500 a night to break seven amid rising operational costs. The Pistons were second in the N.B.A.’s Western Division, 2% games off the pace. "We've had two winners, but you can’t always win,” Eckman said. “this.club hasn’t jelled yet—but I think things will pick up after the holidays." Americans Win Both Singles Against India PERTH, Australia (UP) — Vic Seixas of Philadelphia and Herb Flam of Beverly Hills, Calif., ignored assorted aches and pains in leading the United States Davis Cup team to a 2-0 lead over India today in the opening singles matches of the inter-zone final. Seixas needed only 45 minutes to dispose of Naresh Kumar, the captain of India’s gallant two-man team, $-3, 6-1, 6-2, after Flam outlasted 19-year old Ramanathap Krishmann, 7-5, 4-6, 10-8, 2-6, 6-4, in a match that consumed almost three hours. Seixas was troubled by a sore shoulder earlier this week, while Flam had complained of stomach cramps. However, neither player appeared in distress today as they took a giant step toward another clash with Australia in the challenge round. The Yanks now need only one more victory in the remaining three matches against India to move on to Adelaide for the challenge round later this month. They can clinch the best-of-five series by winning Saturday’s doubles match. A small crowd of 2,500 sat in the stands surrounding the center court of the Royal Kings Park Tennis Club in brilliant sunshine to watch the opening matches. A strong wind blew across the court during the first match and it seemed to bother both Flam and Krishnan, but it subsided slightly by the time Seixas met Kumar. Discuss Salaries Os Sheriffs, Deputies Salaries for sheriffs and their deputies, cost of feeding prisoners, and other subjects for new laws in 1957 were discussed at a meeting of northeastern Indiana sheriffs, deputies and legislators held in Huntington Wednesday. L. Luther Yager, joint AdamsWells county representative, and sheriff Merle Affolder attended the meeting from Adams county. The group met to list ideas for an executive board and legislative committee meeting December 21 in Indianapolis. Meetings of this type were held in each section of the state. The main problems were a bill for a more equitable salary for sheriffs and deputies, and an allowance increase from 35 cents to 50 cents a meal for prisoners. Lundy And Campbell Key To Purdue Five LAFAYETTE, Ind. <UP)—A big football end and a tiny golf star may determine Purdue’s fate in the 1957 Big Ten basketball title chase. Hastily converted from lineman to center was 6-6 Lamar Lundy. , the Boilermakers’ senior. He wasted no time in the changeover and deposited the basket in the opener at Evansville. Guard Joe Campbell, the 5-7 Big Ten golf champion who reached the semi-finals in this year’s National Amateur, has developed into Purdue’s floor general. He also became a hardwood hero in a hurry—plunking down the winning bucket at Missouri last Saturday. Purdue, which won 9 of 14 conference games last year to tie for third place and finished 16-6 overall, takes a 3-game winning streak against Notre Dame here Saturday. Three other “tune-up” games follow before Ray Eddy's boys launch their loop schedule at Michigan State Jan. 5. With three games under their belt, the Boilermakers’ starting line-up is pretty well molded. Eddy likes 6-5 sophomore Bill Greve and Ed McCormick, 6-4 junior, at forward; Lundy in the jivot, and 6-foot sophomore '"harles Kehrt the other guard. His No. 6 man is Harvey Austin,

another sophomore who stands 6-1. Eddy lost forward Joe Sexson, who scored 420 points for a opeseason school record last year and whose three-year scoring pace of 1,095 also was a new mark. Although only three lettermen are back, Eddy figured he wasn’t any worse off than last year. "I believe we might have some better outside shooters,” he said. ' "Last year, you know, we just had Sexson.” . <,,■ Greve ‘ and Kehrt provide the long-range artillery this season. Besides, said Eddy, Purdue’? defense’is stickier than last year, a fact DePaul coach Ray Meyer attests to. His team was beaten at Purdue Wednesday night, 83-78. “Campbell moves better this year than ever before,’.’ he said, “and Lundy really , gave us fits on defense. He stayed in the middle close to the basket and made it tough for us to get in close.” Eddy, who predicted his club will finish “about half-way up”,.in the Big Ten, behind Illinois, Minnesota and Northwestern, said there still was plenty of room for improvement. But he admitted his ooys “looked good in spurts.” College Basketball DePauw 73, Indiana State 55. Oakland City>92, Marian 69. Hanover 99, Manchester 71. < Ball State 94, Wabash 90 (overtime).
