(W — A husky AWOL soldier was held on arson charges today in three church fires. One of them was a two million dollar conflagration he allegedly admitted setting in anger over being unable to open a poor box, police said. Investigators also were questioning Pfc. Robert Whelan, 18, of Somerville, Mass., in connection with a fourth church fire. Whelan, a 6-footer who had been living hand to mduth for nearly a month while absent without leave from Ft. Devens, Mass., was arrested late Monday in connection with the costly fire which destroyed St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church here Saturday. “I did it because I was mad,” Whelan was quoted as saying. Police said he robbed poor boxes for money to eat and became angry when he was frustrated in opening them. The youthful soldier under questioning also admitted, police said, setting a $2,500 fire in St Joseph’s Church in Boston’s West End Sunday and a third fire in the Evangelist Episcopal Church on Beacon Hill in Boston Nov. 19. He was questioned about a fire in the Greek Orthodox Church of Saints Constantine and Helen here, which" destroyed the chancel shortly before the fire in St. John’s Cathedral. . Police said he touched off the fire in St. John the Evangelist Cathedral by lighting vestments in a closet. DULLES (Cowtlnued rro?u 4*.ae, One) Martino warned the West to forget recent disputes like Suez and Cyprus and cooperate not only in the North Atlantic region but elsewhere, especially in the Middle East, if it is to stand up to Soviet encroachment there. All the ministers agreed that the Soviet threat continues. All expressed grave concern over the situation in Eastern Europe and particularly that in Hungary. PIKUP 2nd pgh: An Anglo-Americ TWO DEATH (Continued from rent One> killer of six persons who was condemned to death for slaying an Evansville fililng station operator. Craig said Irvin was left out because he is under indictment in Kentucky.” No out-of-state’ indictments* pended against Flowers or Mrs. Collins. However, Irvin could be saved by the state parole board or a future Indiana governor — Craig leaves office in January — before he is electrocuted March 29. ’ln fact, all three could be freed at a later date by a governor or the parole board. Appeals filed by Flowers and Irvin for new trials still pended in the state supreme court. An appeal for a new trial for Mrs. •Collins awaited action in Lake criminal court. Flowers, who was sentenced Jupe 30, 1955, had received three stays of execution. A sentence reduced by a governor cannot be increased by any successor.

MENTAL HEALTH (ContlnnTd from Page One) Indiana's mental hospitals, many of whom are forgotten by their families. (C—tinned from Page One) i four Asian nations. The 17 Z nation 1 resolution was introduced Monday and is under debate. i The sources said U.S. Ambassa- [ dor Henry Cabot Lodge Jr. prei sided and strongly criticized In- [ Dia’s V. K. Krishna Menon for ati tempting to “interfere” with the ' main objective of the 17-power res- [ olution—condemnation of Russia. ! Krishna Menon indicated that if [ the amendments were not accepti ed he would press a separate res- [ olution incorporating them. Walkout Looms ' But the General Assembly, if it ! approves the 17 nation resolution 1 —almost a sure thing—could decide afterwards not to vote on the Asian resolution. , Meanwhile, a move started developing among Western delegations to walk out of the General Assembly hall whenever a representative of Hungary speaks. Lodge said he personally has been doing it for a long while. “I don’t listen to any satellites of the Soviet Union and I do not believe that anyone should waste time hearing them," he said.
