Eger Players Present Unique Program Here
By Marlene Laurent The Eger Players, the only ensemble of its kind in the world, treated members of the Adams county Civic Music Association to a unique musical experience Thursday night at the Decatur Yovth and Community Center. The French horn gained eminence among local music lovers as the result of the virtuosity of Joseph Eger. America’s foremost exponent of the horn. Eger obviously loves the expressiveness and rich tones of the French horn and his appreciation tor it proves contagious as he effectively displays the versatility, agility and deeply-moving qualities of the difficult-to-play instrument. Undoubted high spot of the evening last night as far as enthusiastic reception by the audience was the Preludes of George Gershwin which Eger has adopted to his French horn ensemble. The tones of the horn lent a peculiar charm to the beloved Gershwin music which was further enhanced by the combined interpretation with the other members of the ensemble. Each artist in tne ensemble which is composed of Eger on the French horn. Nina Lugovoy on the piano, Charles Libove on the violin and Sterling Hunkins on the cello, was given the opportunity to display his or her artistic ability. The concert was planned in several groups with different combinations of instruments to give an interesting variety to the program. Audience delight was especially expressed following a duo presentation by Charles Libove and Nina Lugovoy who have achieved prominence in musical circles as a vio-lin-piano duo. The expressiveness of Miss Lugovoy was emphasized in her own solo when she interpreted two or Chopin s compositions. Both Libove and Sterling Hunkins proved themselves masters of their instruments when they were given the opportunity to present their solos. A very delightful presentation was a little dance’ called "Tambourin'’ by Jean Phillippe Rameau. This number was pre-; sented by Hunkins and Miss Lugovoy and, except for the lack of space, would have had everyone dancing. # However, without detracting from the beauty and artistic contribution of the piano, vicflin and cello, the main feature of the entire concert was graduation of the French horn from the position of background accompaniment to a solo instrument. The audience’s interest in this was displayed in the question and answer period cm “my unusual bit of plumbing” as Eger referred to his horn. i The discussion and demonstration which followed the concert included a display of the range of the french horn, which is about four and a half octaves, and a breathing contest between Eger and the audience. (The musician won. ) The contest was to show the importance of breathing in playing the wind instrument. Eger also explained how the tonal quality of the horn is changed with the right hand which is inserted in the bell of the instrument. Next on the concert schedule for the association members is a program by the Indianapolis Symphony orchestra to be presented Jan. 14 at the Decatur high school auditorium.
