(UP)—Fortyeight students have been suspended from Hammond High School for belonging to illegal secret societies. School Supt. Lee Caldwell said Wednesday night. After a meeting with students involved and their parents Wednesday, Caldwell said reinstatement “will be soon.” He said there probably will be no more suspensions. School authorities “will be moving on next” to investigate the possibility of illicit secret clubs at Hammond’s other high schools, Caldwell said. “So far preliminary investigation doesn’t show anything.” Caldwell told how authorities uncovered recent evidence about the secret societies which were banned from public schools a year ago. “We found out through parents themselves who objected to clubs and were concerned about the pupils, and those whose children wouldn’t join, he said. He said they also got evidence through a student who "just got loud mouthed and boasted about it.’.’ »_ The Columbia Bar in Tampa’s Latin Quarter boasts that it has been in operation daily since 1905.
