It is there that he will continue to exercise influence on party affairs. He said he would return to his Chicago law practice Jan. 1. A great debate is going on within the party over whether it should continue to follow a moderate course as urged by Democratic congressional leaders—Senate Democratic Leader Lyndon B. Stand Not Announced Stevenson has not said where he will stand in Ulis battle. He won this year’s Democratic nomination as a moderate candidate, acceptable to both North and South. The Democrats' other “elder statesman,” former President Harry S. Truman, is a strong advocate of a broad liberal party program. Mr. Truman opposed Stevenson’s nomination this year and predicted he would not win the election because of his stand for “moderation.” In bowing out from the 1960 presidential fight, Stevenson said the Democrats are “fortunately blessed with many able men” worthy of the nomination so u r years hence.
