No Sei Prices For 1957 Automobiles Dealers All Quote Different Prices I DETROIT (UP) - Price tags on the new 1957 cars are written in disappearing ink. You can get a straight answer right off the bat to every question except: “How much?” Putting a finger on the selling price of a new Ford, Chevrolet or . Plymouth, ready to drive away, is Jan interesting and educational exI ercise. First, there ts the retail price (recommended by the manufacturei. ’t may or may not include transport costs, handling and distribution. state and excise costs, license and enough gas to make thefirst stop light. Then there is the car’s “list price” as the dealer quotes it to a prospective customer. And then there is the “just for you" discounted price that many dealers already were offering to new car buyers less than 10 days after the ’57 models went on sale. Talk Changes Prices I decided to spend a day in shopping around for a new car. To lessen complications, there was no trade-in of a used car. Phone calls to two branches of the same Ford dealer brought two prices for the same six cylinder Custom 300 sedan. One was $2,100, the other across town $2,000. I went to the first dealer and told the salesman I needed a car right away. He added a buqch of figures, tossed in a heater and arrived at $2,150. But when I looked unhappy, said I wanted to pay Cash and had $1,900 saved, he added the figures again and came up with a new total—sl,996.

I telephoned a Plymouth dealer and asked the price on a Belvidere sedan. The salesman said $2,100. I- said that was too much. “Why don’t you come down so we can talk prices?”, he said. “But you said the Belvidere would cost me $2,100,” I replied. "I said it costs $2,100,” he said. “I didn’t say what you could get ‘it for. Don’t let that $2,100 confuse you." . f No Set Prices A Chevrolet spokesman said his firm hates to advertise prices because such, a policy might imply there was a “set” price. “We like to leave the profit margin up to each dealer,” he said. “It allows him to use his own discretion.” t It takes a poker face and a crystal ball to figure out what the “average" car will cost the "average” buyer. But it is a matter of record that ’57 models are costing dealers more. Only Nash and Hudson have bucked the upward trend. Price hikes on lowest-price fourdoor sedans range from a $93 increase reported by Ford and Plymouth to $126 by Chevrolet. But how much, if any, of that is passed on to the customer depends on his adroitness at bargaining and the dealer’s competitive situation. The industry wasn’t so shy about advertising prices back in the 19305. And small wonder. An advertisement of a 1937 Cadillac came right out and stated the price—$1,445. Increase Inaugural Ball Ticket Prices $3 Ticket Increase For Inaugural Ball WASHINGTON 'UP)—It will cost $3 more to attend President Eisenhower’s second inaugural ball than it did his first one. Tickets this year will cost sl2 in 1952. As usual, they were not on sale to the general public. You are entitled to buy them only if you are invited. The Jan. 21 ball will be held at three hotels and the National Guard Armory. x The four sites chosen for the “co-equal" balls can accommodate 14,600 celebrants. The planners hope to hold actual attendance to that figure. But they were making no guarantees. There were two ball sites in 1952 —the Armory and McDonough gym at Georgetown University—with a total capacity of about 14,500. Estimated attendance was far above that figure. “ The four most “honored guests” at the balls will be President and Mrs. Eisenhower and Vice President and Mrs. Richard M. Nixon. They will visit all four affairs. T.c head of a pin can contain 25,000,000 polio viruses. The common cold virus is even smaller.
