Welcome to Santa Claus Saturday afternoon. Bring the kids to see the parade. < o—o Attend church at least once during the Thanksgiving season. The Pilgrims set aside the fall season as the one to give thanks to God for the bounty of the crops. o OThe $161,368.75 mailed out this week by the First State Bank in Christmas savings checks will have an impact on business in this community. Decatur merchants are prepared. o o One invention the Russians can’t claim is the spirit of Thanksgiving. Atheistic Communist Party Leader Nikita S. Khrushchev is reported as saying: "Things are going very well with us. If we believed in the existence of God we thank Him for it.” ——o- !-O— — Business men consider the fact that the increased growth is coming from Indiana’s favorable Industrial climate. Increased size of farming operations means fewer agricultural residents. The increase in total population therefore comes from new industries locating in the state. Industries must consider Indiana more favorable than tire average state. o o An Arkansas woman who was “so nervous she was shaking” when she found her three small children gleefully tearing up and scattering to the wind $2,000 in old bills and payroll checks, is just beginning to learn the facts of life. In her case the money was part of an abandoned $16,000 cache whose owner is not known. Wait till her children get a little older and continue to mistake the parents hard earned cash for play money. ■ ■ o O Indiana now has more than four million residents, having increased its population since 1950 from 3,934,224 to 4,413,000, or 12.2 percent. The nation as a whole increased its population only 10.9

percent. Politicians will eye the comparison of growth between the state and nation with the thought that it might mean another congressman after the 1960 census. During the last census it was discovered that Indiana and the nation had grown at nearly the same rate and the state’s congressional contingent remained unchanged as to number and districts. o—o— The National Grange believes the U. S. agricultural department is not keeping up with the changes in agriculture.* Particularly, it objects to the use of 191014 and other past periods as the basis of establishing parity prices for farm products. Any ope who has even watched the activities of a modern farmer with his new improved machinery and methods together with new crops, and hybrids of old ones, must agree with the Grange that the time has come to change the methods of gauging farm prosperity. The best method to use in new farm legislation is 'the problem. o—o Governor Elect Handley may be on the right track when he asks the Federal Government for assistance in finding a new head for the state mental hospital setup. He has asked that the candidate “not be identified with either political party.” We hope he is successful in finding this ideal type of administrator as our mental institutions are now in a deplorable state with physicians being fired for graft and drunken driving and disputes raging between the superintendents as to type of buildings and treatments to be used. We could also point out that Handley may be chasing the rainbow gs frequently appointees divorced from politics are unable to boss subordinates who have obtained their jobs through politics. The job requires a rare blend of technical knowledge, business ability and diplomacy. For the sake of all the unfortunates in our mental hospitals we hope he is successful in finding such an administrator.
