More than two dozen new shows have made their debut on the networks this season, but with the exception of CBS-TVs “Playhouse 90,” none has received both enthusiastic critical and audience reception. One new show, “High Finance,” already is headed for the boneyard. Other new starters are in trouble. * Variety, the Gideon of the trade, has dubbed the current semester "the year TV laid a bomb.” A look at the latest Nielsen report shows no fresh starter even close to the top 10. The roster of 1 the elite is headed by standbys like “Lucy,” Ed Sullivan, “The $64,000 Question,” “Disneyland," "December Bride,” “G. E. Theatre,” Jackie Gleason and "the Lineup.” Rating-wise, some Os the highly touted new entries have failed to live up to expectations. Wally Cox’s “Hiram Holliday” shows a poor 14.4 for NBC-TV in the latest Nielsen chart and is being swamped by ABC - TV’s “Disneyland” and the CBS -TV Arthur Godfrey show. ABC - TV's “Wyatt Earp” (31.1) is knocking off two new shows, CBS-TV’s “The Brothers" (25.0) and NBC ~ TV’s “Noah’s Ark" (20.4). Another old ABC - TV etnry, “Crossroads” (21.2) is splitting audience favor evenly with CBSTV’s “Zane Grey Theatre” (21.1) and the highly publicized Walter Winchell show (20.1). But ABC-TV has run/into trouble of its own with its major drama offering for the season, “Wire Service." It is doing so poorly opposite the stiffer dramatic competition of CBS-TV’s “Climax” and “Playhouse 90” that there is talk of switching it to another time slot. Right now, in the words of Variety again, this season may go down in TV history as the year of “the dud parade.” According to figures released by the Health News Institute of New York, the pharmaceutical industry in the United States employs 92,500 persons, including 56,100 production workers.
