The county board had hiked the assessments of township assessors to moye than 412 milI lion dollars. i The decision climaxed a dispute , during which review board spokes- ' men tistified in a Statehouse hearing last week that the steel mills were not paying their fair share of the county tax burden. Com- ’ pany witnesses claimed the ’mills ’ were overassessed in comparison with other property holders. Involved in the dispute were the U. S. Steel Corporation's huge ! Gary works and three of the i firm’s divisions—American Bridge Division, National Tube Division and Universal Afalas Cement Co. 1 The other firms were Inland Steel Co. and Youngstown Sheet & Tube Co. The original personal property ' township assessment totaled 72 million dollars. Joda Newsom, state board , member, said the decision came . despite the failure of the firms to submit a breakdown of their holdings in the county. The board had to act quickly because Lake County is in the midst of setting its tax rate and the steel assessments would bear heavily on the rate, he said. ' The final assessments are “com- ‘ parable to the assessments on other personal property” in the county, Newsom said. Assessments for the four U. S. Steel plants totaled about 52 million dollars, compared with 250 million dollars set by the review , board. For Inland it was 23..mi11i0n lion dollars compared" with” 1(77’ t million dollars, and Youngstown IS million dollars compared with 55 million dollars. ; Pendleton Mon Dies As Auto Hits Truck 1 ANDERSON. Navy Establishes Base At South Pole United States Navy Sets Up First Base McMURDO SOUND, Antarctia (IB—The U. S. Navy today set up the first base ever established at the South Pole. Two Navy DC4 transports landed at the bottom of the world with eight Seabees naval construction battalions led by Lt. Richard A. Bowers of Williamsburg, Pa. The unit is the advance party of “Operation Deepfreeze” personnel who will build a scientific station at the South Pole as part of the United States contribution to the International Geophysical Year. The two Navy twin-engined transports arrived over the pole in brilliant sunshine. Visibility on the polar plateau was virtually unlimited. A cargo-carrying U. S. Air Force Globemaster and a U.S. Navy Skymaster circled overhead while the DC3s levelled off for the landing on the hard-packed ice and snow. First to land was a plane piloted by Lt. Cmdr. Conrad S. Shinn, of Spray, N. C. Shinn also was at the controls of the transport which made the first landing at the pole three weeks ago. In addition to the Seabees, the planes carried 11 dogs and equipment to set up a temporary base. Four tons of heavy equipment, including a Weasel snow vehicle, were dropped by the Globemaster after the Navy planes had taken off. The drop was carried oul successfully.
