Yellow Jackets Defeat Monmouth Eagles In Season Opener, 56-40

The Decatur Yellow Jacket* opened their 1956-57 basketball season Tuesday night with an easy 56-40 victory over the county and sectional champion Monmouth Eagles at the Decatur gym. It marked the second defeat in as many starts for the Eagles. The game started slowly, with Monmouth moving the ball around and not making much effort to shoot and the Jackets unable to hit despite several good shots. Stan Kirkpatrick finally broke the ice with a field goal after nearly two minutes had elapsed. Kirkpatrick converted a pair of free throws and Gene Baxter hit a twopointer to give Decatur a 6-0 lead with half of the first quarter gone. Dick Brandt did Monmouth's first scoring a free throw after five and one-half minutes had elapsed, but Tony Kelly hit three in a row from the field and the Jackets had a 12-1 lead" with 1:40 to go. Jim Boerger connected for the Eagles' first fielder, Larry Moses added a pair of foul tosses and Brandt a field goal to make the first quarter score 12-5. Decatur. Monmouth was limited to four points, fielders by Boerger and Bob Hildebrand, while the Jackets added 11 points, five by Moses, to take a 25-9 advantage to the dressing room at the main intermission. Decatur built its bulge —to 22 points at 33-11 midway through the third period, and the rival quintets traded points the rest of the quarter for a- 43-21 lead for Decatur going into the final eight minutes. The issue was never in doubt, with a later flurry by the Eagles cutting Decatur’s final margin to 16 points. Kelly was the game’s top'scorer with 20 points on six field goals and eight out of 13 free throws. Moses and Baxter each tallied 11 and Kirkpatrick nine. Menter and Brandt each scored 10 for the Eagles, while John Myers, only regular returning from last year’s championship squad, was held to eight points, all in the se-nnd half. Each team hit 16 * Id "cals, with the Jackets, up.

The Cubs shuffled three members of last year’s last place National League team, third baseman Don Hoak, pitcher Warren Hacker and outfielder Pete Whisenant, to Cincinnati to obtain Singleton and third baseman Ray Jablonski in a major off-season deal. Redlegs Manager Birdie Tebbets said at his Nashua, N. H., home said “we think Warren Hacker may develop into another Brooks Lawrence for us." Hoak will have a chance at the regular third base job if he can outclass Alex Grammas, Tebbets added. “It's all speculation," Scheffing said. "Singleton’s been in the Pacific Coast League for the last five years and hasn’t had a bad year. Last year he won 18 games and the year before he was 19 and 12."
