. President Nasser of Egypt, claims the united action of the United States and Russia saved his country. It’s a new twist to international affairs for the United States and Russia to agree. ——o o— — But then, 'Things are changing everywhere. Los Angeles had a heat wave over the week-end. o o— — A donation of one dollar to CARE will send a Thanksgiving package of 22 pounds of food from the U. S. farm surplus to a needy family abroad. This would help feed a family of four for a month. It is a practical solution to the farm problem as well as a humanitarian thing to do. Mail your dollars to CARE, New York City, New York. 4H O Cuba has charged Russia with genocide in the mass murder of 65,000 Hungarians in that country’s short-lived effort to win freedom. Its hard to understand why all of the nations in the world have failed to support the motion to censure Russia in its brutal treatment of the Hungarian patriots. The new Asiatic countries recently freed from British and French colonialism were most noticeable in their absence when the vote was taken. o o Although the Indiana legislature will remain heavily Republican in 1958, it is interesting to note that the actual Republican majority in the senate was reduced from 36 to 14 two years ago to 33-17. This reduced majority is just below the two-thirds’ necessary for a change of rules and certain other parliamentary procedure. The Democrats will be able to slow but not stop certain bills and motions.' O o—ro 0 A large crowd should attend the annual 4-H club recognition dinner this evening at the Decatur Youth and Community Center. Our future agricultural leaders need the encouragement of all of us in their efforts to improve their knowledge and character through 4-H club work. It is sponsored each year by the retail division of the Decatur Chamber of Commerce because Decatur merchants recognize the responsibility they owe to the progressing farm community surrounding Decatur.

Decatur is a little cleaner since the week-long clean-up program by the city street department which picked up trash and tin cans. As a regular service every two months it has gained in popularity. City Street Commissioner Bernard Clark reports that more and more people are saving up their trash for his trucks to pick up. It’s part of the city’s promise to give increased service. o o Still short of the goal of $13,400, the community chest leaders have called upon our most dependable citizens to clean up the drive Thursday evening. Boys and girls from the two high schools, together with the Boy and Girl Scouts, will make a house to house canvas to complete a similar evening drive of a few days ago. Berne and Fort Wayne have both gone over the top on their drives. With the leadership of our youth, we are certain Decatur will do likewise. o o— — As a result of reversals in the far Northwest, the National Republican administration is reported as re-examining its present power and natural resources program which has previously favored the big power companies instead of public ownership. On the other hand it is considering raising power rates to rural electric organizations in the Southwest. The Democratic Congress last year passed a bill freezing power rates in this area, but President Eisenhower vetoed it. It will be interesting to watch developments in the administration’s give-away program. ——o— —o The Indiana State Farm Bureau has approved a plan for the next legislature to add a surtax to the gross income tax, probably similar in nature to the one which provided funds for the payment of the soldiers’ bonus. The Farm . Bureau also suggested an increase in the gasoline tax for county road purposes and a reduction in farm personal property taxes. Governor Handley and his new Republican controlled legislature will have to find some way to replace Governor Schricker’s balance in the state general fund which was _ spent under Craig's administration. The Farm Bureau may have the only practical, plan under the circumstances. 1 -

Reports Wild Men Os Borneo Going Soft Outboard Motors On Dugout Canoes CHICAGO (UP)—The wild men of Borneo have gone soft. They’re putting outboard motors on their* dugout canoes. So reports Dr Robert F. Inger, curator of amphibians and reptiles at the Chicago Natural Museum. Inger returned recently from a five-month expedition to the rain forests of Borneo. And he was taken aback by the inroads civilization has made in one of the world’s most primitive regions. The natives still carve their canoes from tree trunks in the laborious custom of their ancestors. But they have cast asirre their paddles. The tribesmen, known as Ibans or Sea-Dyaks, earn the money to buy outboard motors and other such modern artifacts by working in British-owned oil fields and timber camps .—— Save Their Money •‘They’re the most frugal people in the world,” Inger said. “A native will work as an oil field rigger for six months, maybe nine. He’ll earn $350 a month. “On payday he'll draw only about $lO to buy rice and let the company save the rest for him until he’s ready to quit and go home to his family.” ’ Inger said he was amazed at the changes in Borneo since his last visit in, 1950. "In the British lumber camps of North Borneo they’re using buland tractors to strip the timberands,” he said. Still more trees are chopped down by nomadic native tribes who’strip off an area, plant it in rice for a couple of years, then move on when the soil grows thin. Pass the Python Filet "As a result,” Inger said, "the rain forests are disappearing.” These tall forests, with their dense undergrowth, are vital to the study of evolution because the lush environment teems with unusual animal life. “But if we’re going to further our studies we’ll have to hurry before the forests are gone,” Inger said. Inger collected about 1,000 drogs, 5,000 fish and several hundred snakes, lizards, mammals and other specimens. Accompanied by natives he traveled ...hundreds of miles on the Rejang, Kinabatangaa and Kalabakan rivers in the outboardpowered canoes. Sometimes Inger varied his diet by sampling the specimens he had collected. Once he dined on filets from an 11-foot python.
