Both Parties Claim Victory In This State State Chairmen Os Both Parties See Triumph Tuesday By SAM NEWLUND United Press Staff Correspondent INDIANAPOLIS (UP)—lndiana leaders of both major parties flatly predicted victory today as their candidates rested their case before a jury of two million voters in Tuesday’s election. "We’re going to carry the state,” insisted State Democratic Chair--nan Charles Skillen. "I’ve said hat time and time again.” Republican State Chairman Alvin Cast, said he was “naturally very optimistic,” and that President Elsenhower has strength in Indiana because of the fighting in Europe and the Middle ’last. Skillep’s prediction applied to all Democrats on the ballot. Cast said Mr. Eisenhower would carry T ndiana by 225,00-250,00 votes, larold Handley would win the govaor race, Homer Capehart would be reelected senator and the GOP zould “hold on” to its 9-2 margin n Indiana’s Congressional races. Cast predicted Handley would defeat Democrat Ralph Tucker by 175,000-200,000 votes and Capehart would beat Claude Wickard by 125,-100-150,000. “No one is going to be foolish •aough to predict the margin of /ictory,” said Skillen. Sees 2 Million Votes Cast predicted slightly more han two million Hoosiers will flock to the polls to help elect a ?resident and choose 13 Statehouse officials, 11 Congressmen, 126 state legislators and about 600 ?ounty officers. That would break he previous record of more than 4,900,00 sei four years ago. . , Skillen estimated a vote of '“LOO to two million. . ~ “ ation from Indiana’s 4,precincts was expected to be . an all-time high of 2,500,000. Jut party leaders expect about >ne-fifth of that number to fail to exercise their right to vote. The Weatherman lent a hand to hopes for a record-breaking turnnit by forecasting continued mild -.emperatures election day. It's ‘fairly certain,” the We a ther Bureau said, that rain will not poll the turnout. State election officials urged voters to decide on theif choices before going to the polls. They said voting may be slower than usual because of the time it takes to digest the questions in the time referendum. Meanwhile, Capehart issued the r “final statement of his campaign,” pledging, if reelected, help President Eisenhower preserve the peace, to permanently solve the farm problem, to bring about a tax revision to help small business and to continue my fight against give-away foreign aid programs.” In another statement Stinday night, Capehart said “the consumer’s cost of a market basket of farm foods in July was less than it was when the Republican administration took office.” Charges Fence-Straddling In other last-m inu t e camjoined in a Marion County rally Saturday night. Tucker said Handley “has tried to be on both sides of the fence and astradjed it at the same time.” "Harold Handley stated recently that because of my position on federal aid to education that I would surrender Indiana to Washington bureaucrate and strangle our personal liberty,” Tueker said, “doesnt he realize that both candidates for President., have taken the same position that I have on federal aid to’‘education?” The average American is expected to buy 3.5 pairs of shoes this year for a total of 590 million pairs.
Two Persons Hurt In Accident Sunday No Collision But Two Curs Damaged Two Fort Wayne persons were treated at the Adams county memorial hospital Sunday for injuries sustained in an accident at 2:30 a. tn. on U. S. highway 224 two miles east of Decatur. Roger R. Barnett, 24, and Judy Haworth, 20, both suffered minor injuries in the accident, which Involved two Fort Wayne cars. Barnett was driver of one of the cars and the other was operated by Melvin C. Markley, 23, also of ForWWayne. Both vehicles were headed west toward Decatur. Barnett passed Markley and apparently cut in too soon, causing both vehicles to go out of control although there was no collision. Markley pulled over on the berm and the ear went out into a field on the right side of the road and overturned. The Barnett car continued about 1,500 feet and then it, too, went out of control and rolled over several times before coming to a stop on the left side of the road. The Barnett car was totally demolished and damage to the Markley vehicles was estinwted at 21,000. Investigating officers were deputy sheriff Charles Arnold and state trooper Al Coppes, assisted by city police. The investigation is being continued. Ireland, having no forests or coal mines, gets its fuel from 3,000,000 boggy acres of peat, decaying grass., rush, and moss. A single digger can cut some 8,000 pounds of soggy turf a day. Dried for use, this shrinks to 300 pounds.
