Suspends Clinical Trial 01 Compound Suspension Is Mode By Eli Lilly & Co. INDIANAPOLIS (UP)— Eli Lilly & Co. announced today the suspension of a 15-month clinical trial of an anti-diabetic compound given by mouth. Dr. Kenneth G. Kohlstaedt, director of clinical research, said 2,900 physicians who have been testing the compound, known as carbutamide. in more than 10.OOOpatients, have been notified of the suspension. Kohlstaedt said the suspension was decided on because of “untoward effects” in about five per cent of the patients in the test. A few of these had "serious side reactions,” the same as reactions from other sulfa drugs. Carbuta- - ■■ — ■»

mide is a sulfonamide derivative. In view of these findings, and in full consideration that carbutamide is a drug of convenience rather than necessity, Lilly ba* lieves it is pruaeui u> suspend me clinical trial ne rtinw f>i »i er investigation,” Kohlstaedt said. The arug meet the rigid requirements for a drug that must be taken throughout life,” the report said. Lilly said "we share the disappointment of many diabetics" who had "hoped that carbutamide would be the long-sought answer to the need for an oral therapy.” Lilly said discontinuing use of the drug “involves no danger to 4) patients who have been controlling their diabetes with it. They may return safely to their former method of control.” • Lilly said it already has other compounds under study in its research for oral control of diabetes. About 10 billion persons attend" movie theaters throughout the world each year. . film 1 '
No Lion WOLF LAKE, Mich. - ((W) - Residents here gave a collective sign of relief when the lion reported in tiie area turned out to be a shaved St. Bernard dog. The dog’s back was shaved by a veterinarian before performing an operation on the pet. For Fishermen CONCORD, N. H. — Here are some fishing tips from the New Hampshire’s fish and game department. It takes approximate-, ly 100 nightcrawlers to fill a pint container. An old umbrella frame covered with fine cloth mesh makes a handy minnow net. It ( may be folded up when not in use. : Outside of professional school alumni, only 38 per cent of college H'ifSaahtes go to work'ftftiie fields they majored in.
