Indiana High Schools Open Net Seasons By KURT FREUDENTHAL United Press Sports Writer INDIANAPOLIS (UP)—A brandnew era in Indiana high school basketball, Hoosierland’s finest contribution to the national sports scene, will be launched this week when several score smaller clubs unveil the 196-57 campaign. The season officially opens Thursday, Nov. 1, but most openers scheduled for this week will be Friday—traditionally the favorite night for hoop action. While most maJor teams were still in process of wrapping up the football season, the early hardwood headlines belong to the hundreds of smalltown quintets which do not participate in the grid sport. Most perennial "name” teams, including state champion Indianapolis Attucks, will not embark on another cage season until the latter part of November. End of Attucks Era? There appeared to be general agreement, however, that the departure from Attucks of such brilliant stars as Oscar Robertson, Bill Brown and Stan Patton, nucleus of a modern-day “Wonder Five," spells the end of an era during which the Flying Tigers rolled to a record 45-game winning streak and two successive state championships. Attucks opens at Terre Haute Gerstmeyer, another 1955 state finalist, in one of the early-season top games Nov. 24. New gymnasiums have sprung up all over the state, with East Chicago Washington and Evansville leading the way. The upstate goalhouse seats 6,133 for the tourney, acording to school officials who have applied for sectional and regional sessions. Evansville’s Municipal Stadium, and operation similar to the Allen County Coliseum in Fort Wayne, seats 10,500 for basketball, about 1,100 seats more than the Indiana University Fieldhouse, the current site for the downstate semi-final tourney. Evansville officials have applied for the third-round session, but no decision on tourney sites will be announced by the IHSAA until January. Phillips Dedicates Gyms IHSAA commissioner L.V. Phillips already has dedicated gyms at Rosedale and Clay City. He will help dedicate one at Sandcreek Nov. 2, and others later include those at Petersburg, Madison Heights, Southwestern, North Central at Ramsey, Scottsburg, and East Chicago. Among the smaller teams, Jackson Twp. of Porter County probably is the most eager to start on the right track. Jackson owns a 41-game losing string. Markle was discontinued after running its losing streak to 39. Cutler and Mexico also would have better luck this time around. Both compiled 2-18 seasons last year. But Cutler has all its starters back. Mexico lost only one. Millersburg, a 20-game winner, also has four veterans back. Morgantown, a first-time sectional
winner last February with a 24-3 mark, lost five seasoned players but retained five others.
The IHSAA listed 742 full members, the same as last year. Four schools folded since the last roll call. Five others in ‘Tippecanoe County consolidated into Southwestern, with former Purdue star Joe Sexson the coach, and there are four spanking-new schools— Evansville North, Edwardsport, Madison Heights at Anderson and North Central near Indianapolis. Clarksville is listed as a full member for the first time. Independent Net League Is Opened Play opened Monday night in the Adams county independent net league at the Lincoln school gym in this city, with two games. There are 10 teams in this year’s league. In last night’s openers, Willshire edged Convby, 46-43, and Linn Grove defeated Berne, 53-43. Oklahoma Back On Top Os All College Teams By NORMAN MILLER United Press Sports Writer NEW YORK (UP) — Oklahoma, which displayed its lavish football talents against Notre Dame to prove a point before a nationwide television jury, received the onesided aclaim of the United Press board of coaches today as the No. 1 college team. The powerful Sooners used their game against unhappy Notre Dame as a clinical experiment to establish their right to the top rating over Michigan State. And the Spartans helped the Oklahoma cause by falling upset victim to Illinois. Other upsets produced the biggest shakeup of the season anfong the top 10 teams. Minnesota, lowa and Stanford joined the select circle for the first time this year and Pittsburgh returned after an absence of three weeks. To still criticism of an “easy” schedule, Oklahoma set out last Saturday with a mission. The Sooners, supplanted in the No. 1 spot by Michigan State during the past week, were determined to exceed the Spartans’ margin of victory (47-14) over Notre Dame. Detractors Became Believers Oklahoma’s 40-0 rout, acomplished before millions of TV-look ers, made believers out of many detractors. Twenty-nine of the 35 outstanding coaches who rate the teams weekly for the United Press picked Oklahoma tops in the nation this week. With five additional second-place votes and one for fifth, the Sooners’ total of 341 points was just nine short of a perfect score. The sum also was the largest received by a team in three years. Georgia Tech, which received the six other first-place ballots and a total of 306 points, moved up to second place and Tennessee advanced to No. 3. The top three teams all have 5-0 won-lost records. Michigan State, beaten 20-13 by Illinois in one of last weekend’s biggest shockers, fell from first to fourth place. Texas A & M and Ohio State each moved up two notches to Nos. 5 and 6. The week’s four newomers completed the top 10 group. Minnesota and lowa, flowae Big Ten s leading Rose Bowl eonteiiders, each vaulted seven places to the seventh and eighth ratings; ..Stanford, the. Pacific Coast Conference’s best bet for the Rose Bowl, leaped from 18th to ninth place, and Pittsburgh moved up one notch to No. 10. Four Teams Drop Michigan, Southern California, Texas Christian and Baylor, all beaten on Saturday, dropped out of the top 10 group. Oklahoma, seeking a third straight perfect season and its second national championship in a row, should have little trouble achieving its goal. The Sooners next play Colorado (ranked 20th) and then lowa State, Missouri. Nebraska and Oklahoma A & M. One of next weekend’s leading games pits seventh-ranked Minnesota against lOth-ranked Pitt. Tennessee, ranked No. 3, plays 22ndranked Duke; eighth-ranked lowa takes on 13th-ranked Michigan, and llth-ranked Penn State faces 15th-ranked Syracuse in other top games. With point distributed on a 10-9 8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1 basis for votes from first to 10th places, Tennessee’? total was 232 points, Michigan State had 212, Texas A & M 16a Ohio State 152, Minnesota 102. lowa 98, Stanford 53 and Pitt 52.
Penn State advanced six places to head the second 10 group. Next in order came Miami (Fla.), Michigan, Southern California, Syracuse and Baylor. Clemson and Oregon State were tied for 17th place, followed by Princeton and Colorado. Al Lopez Is Named White Sox Manager TAMPA, Fla. (UP)-New Manager Al Lopez vigorously denied the Chicago White Sox are "a dying ball club" and insisted today “they can take the Yankees next year with a little help,” Lopez, who agreed to a one-year contract with the White Sox Monday for approximately the same $40,000 he received for managing the Cleveland Indians this year, will fly to Chicago today to confer with Vice President Charles Comiskey regarding selection of coaches, possible player trades a -d other business affairs. Before departing from his home here, however, the 48-year old Lopez said he completely disagreed with the consensus that the White Sox, who finished third this year, are headed for the second division. Even Marty Marion hinted that' when he left as manager of the club last week. "In my opinion, the White Sox are a coming club, not a dying one,” Lopez said. “They played better baseball against my Cleveland club than any other team in the league. Chicago beat the Indians 15 out of 22 times. No other club ever had that good a record against Cleveland since the first year I managed there when New York beat us pretty good.” While on the subject of the world champion Yankees, Lopez said “they are a good club, but they can be had. We proved that in 1954 with Cleveland.
