How To Select Top Sample Os Soybean Characteristics To Indicate Quality Dr. A. H. Probst, soybean specialist of Purdue University, will be looking for characteristic® that indicate high quality in the 1-peck soybean entries Thursday at the Decatur Youth and Community Center. Entries muet be in by 11 a.m. Two of the most important points are soundness and freedom from foreign material. Soundness is an important item. Soybeans which are sound will be plump, and show little, if any wrinkling. They should have somewhat of an oily appearance, although this varies with varieties. Foreign material in soybeans consists largely of dirt, and weed seeds. The sample must be free from these things. Other important characteristics are type for the variety of soybeans and uniformity. The aoybeans should show trueness to type tor the variety they represent. There will be six classes in the show, each variety constituting a class. They are Blackhawk, Mpnroe, Hawkeye, Harosoy, Lincoln, and Adams varieties. Uniformity has to do with the size and shape of the seed. Large and small seeds in the same sample would be objectionable. They should also be of the same shape, whether rounded, kidney-shaped, or flat. The color should be uniform. Mottling is undesirable. The seedscar may be black, brown, or purple; however, it also should be uniform in color. Maturity Is the final characteristic to be considered. Undeveloped, small and Shriveled soybeans would show lack of maturity and should be removed from the sample. Green soybeans are highly objectionable. In summarization on preparation of a sample of soyeans for the show, uniformity is a “must”. Soybeans should be uniform in color, Size, shape, and color of seedscar, No doubt o lot of hand picking will be required. There should be no purple discoloration or mottling in any of the beans. Wrinkling of the seed-coat or chipped seed-coats should be avoided. All splits should be removed as well as foreign material and damaged beans. With the exception of Hawkeye, the beans should ba glossy in appearance. Medals will be presented to all winners and the pries in each class are first, $10; second, $5 and third, $3. The soybean king will be winner over all classes and will receive a beautiful trophy at the rural-urban fish fry. Moose Collision POLAND SPRING, Me. — (UP) — Television newcasters Charles Tarkinson and Bob Joyce of Portland escaped injury when the truck in which they were riding collided with two moose at the bottom of a sharp dip in the road here.
