[Today's Sport Parade | By OSCAR FRALEY (United Press Sports Writer) NEW YORK (UP) — Notes, goats—and heroes: Don Larsen Os the New York Yankees was the big man and Don Newcombe T>f the Brooklyn Dodgers was, the patsy in the recentlyconcluded World Series but there were plenty of other horns and haloes. Take old Country Slaughter as a guy who doubled in brass. He was the winner of one game wirtt a homer and possibly the loser of another when he failed to make a trio of catches. Yogi Berra and Johnny Kucks were big men for the winners yet, even in defeat, you have to assign hero roles to Bob Turley, defeated in a four-hitter; Clem Labine, who won a 1-0 game in 10 innings; Jackie Robinson, whose hit took the sixth game, and old Sal Maglie, whose brilliant five - hitter bumped head-on into Larsen’s perfect game. Nor were Newcombe andlHaugfi 7 ter the only goats. Andy Carey of the Yankees wasn’t exactly a ball of fire afield and how about Dodger Manager Walt Alston starting Newcombe a second time when everybody in baseball didn’t give big Newk a chance to go five innings. Nor is that second guessing. It fits a psychological pattern such as Sam Snead never winning the U. S. Open. The mental load id simply too much to conquer. One thing, in addition to the new records compiled in the Series, was the clinching of a new baseball phrase to go with such historical sayings as “Texas Leaguer” and “Baltimore chop.” That’s the “Milwaukee bunt’’ — which means a bunt attempt which is popped up for an out. That play killed the Braves coming down the National League stretch and became a press box byword for such plays during the World Series. Casey Stengel still can’t get over the questioner who approached him after Larsen’s perfect no-hiV no-base-runner game and asked him whether this was the best game he had ever seen Larsen pitch. Stengel says there was only one other question to compare with it during his long baseball career. That was after the 1949 game in which Tommy Heinrich’s ninth inning home run beat Newcombe, 1 to 0. After that game, Stengel

chuckles, somebody asked him: “What did you think was the turning point of the game?” Stengel Signs New Two-Year Contract NEW YORK (UP) — Casey Stengel, an authentic millionaire who also is old enough to be collecting social security payments, began plotting plans for at least two more pennants for his world champion Yankees today, at a salary of SBO,000 per year. Stengel was rehired Friday as Yankee manager under the two-, year contract, even though he will be 68 at the completion of it and has all the money he ever will be aide to spend. i “I don't see why I should think about quitting,” he said. “I enjoy the job, my health is good, and* my boys come through for me.” The announcement by the Yanks confirmed a United Press exclusive of last Aug. 17 that Stengel would get the job again. Cagy Casey, who once again confounded the baseball world by coming from an 0-2 won and lost deficit in the World Series to win the classic with Brooklyn in severt games, was assured by general manager George Weiss that he could put another strong - contend-
