Students at Decatur high school will receive safe driving tips from an expert Friday*, Oct. It, when Pat O'Connor, young Indiana race driver and one of the nation’s top competitors, will appear on a highway safety program at a general assembly. His appearance at the high school is part of an educational highway safety progranj sponsored by Champion Spark Plug company, Toledo. 0.. In support of the accident prevention campaign of the national safety council. Although only 27, O’Connor has set a remarkable record In his racing career. A consistent leader in midwest point standings almost from the time he started racing in 1948. he has qualified for the Indianapolis classic three times. Last year he finished eighth and, by driving the entire race without relief, qualified for the exclusive champion 109-mile-an-hour club, since his average speed was 124.644 mph. Dewey Blasted By Senator Kefauver More Underhanded Statements Likely ENROUTE WITH KEFAUVER (UP) — Sen. Estes Kefauver interrupted his running attack on Vice President Richard M. Nixon Thursday night long enough to blast former Gov. Thomas E. Dewey. Kefauver charged at a news conference that the Republican high command apparently had decided that Dewey “will be the one to take the low road this time.” The Democratic /vice presidential candidate made this statement when asked Mi comment on the former New York*governor’s recent radlo-TV speech in which he attacked Adlai E. Stevenson as an “ill-informed, impulsive and mediocre” man. "I expect we can look for more underhanded statements from Mr. Dewey,” Kefauver said. He said Dewey was on the defensive because Stevenson has been makirai “real headway" in his campaign to defeat President Eisenhower. Kefauver went today to Arizona following a rugged, 19-hour campaign that took him into California. He will visit Tucson. Phoenix and Pueblo, Colo., today. But I want a baby, too.” She was taken to the office of State’s Atty. John Gutknecht. Mrs. Bucher wept with joy when police brought her child back. Near collapse, she had spent the night at the home of a sister. The child was reported missing at 8 o’clock Thursday night. Police promptly began a search of the neighborhood, knocking on doors, questioning neighbors, searching alleys and peering in ash cans. In all, 300 officers were assigned to the search. ■■ ~ /; ■ ■ If you have something to sell or rooms for rent, try a Democrat Want Ad. It brings results. I
ning the Darlington. SC.., •‘200” with an average speed of 124.883 rn ph. The program the North Vernon driver will present has been given by other drivers at approximately 100 high schools in 10 states and has received enthusiastic support from educational, civic and law enforcement officials. In it, O’Connor stresses the importance of courtesy, mental alertness and car condition to safe driving. He point* out that for the most part teen-agers can become excellent drivers because of their fast reflexes and superior physical condition. In addition, they have the advantages of better cars, better highways and better traffic controls, which were not available to their parents. Part of his day here will be given over to visually checking the cars of any students who request it. O'Connor maintains that highwaysafety begins with the safety of the automobile and says that a visual inspection may disclose defects which, if not remedied, could lead to a serious accident. He will also appear at driver training classes ■ and show a racing film. Traffic Toll Last October Was 142 Accident Gives Bad Start INDIANAPOLIS (UP) — Indiana's worst automobile wreck this week, in which 10 were killed, sent the October traffic death toll soaring. But it will ha*sa long way to go to exceed’the bloody toll of lust October. In October, 1955, a startling total of 142 deaths were recorded on Hoosier highways and streets. It was an average of more than 4>4 per day and the highest one-mouth total since 1941. Included in the 31-day total was a 12-day period when the average was six deaths per day, double the nOrmal daily average over a oneyear period. Thus far in 1956, traffic deaths have passed the 100 mark only twice and barely so at that. The Muncie wreck, worst in Hoosier history in an accident involving only passenger automobiles, sent the month off to a bad start. Combined with other fatalities since the new motnh began last Monday, the toll for the first few days is so high that safety officials are wondering what it will take 1o keep October froin leading the months again this year. Those 12 deadly days last October when 72 were killed were called “the most concentrated period of violent death In the history of the state.” The year’s toll now Is past 850 and mounting each day, running 6 to 7 per cent above last year's' comparable figures.
