Creamed Comments on the Sunday School Lesson. The Creation Story, Genesis 1:1 to 2:3, for Sunday. October 7. — The /Rev. I). Carl Yoder. In this lesson is considered one of the great scriptural passages to be studied in the last quarter. Here is found the greatness, the eternity of God, the Creator of a beautiful/ orderly world.. In his greatness there resides eternal and infinite power whose operations over continue. To think ot the world having happened without a cause is gullible. Our God can never be defeated for he is allwise, all - powerful. V. 1. “In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.” Mind can not go back farther than "In the beginning.” It is folly to ask. Who made God. for He is eternal. Eternity can not be conceived by man. All reason rests on the fact of an indescrible, good God. Creator of all things. _ V 2. “And the earth was with, out form, and void! and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved on the face of the water." By the power of His Word, the King and the Creator of an unseen universe caused a seen universe to emerge, Man's mental and moral sense could not comphehend the creation. and that was the mental and moral darkness, symbolized by a physical darkness; but God, by His brooding over what was first created, started material, mental and spiritual life. V. 3. "And God said. Let there be light and there was light.” There is such power in His Word j. that, as he spoke, a new doy dawned. Light is a merciful gift of God. Os course, it was good, as stated in the next verse. V. 5. “And God called the light Day. and the darkness he called NfttKC’S was an orderly pra cess. By night and day man marks time. V. 9. “And God said, I>et the waters under the heavens be gathered together unto one place, and was so." Here was another step in creation. Land was necessary for plant and animals life which were created for the land. Note the fitness and purpose of God in all that he created. V T 10. “And God called the dry land Earth and the gathering together of waters called he Seas: and God saw that it was good.” In Hebrew the same thought is often expressed twice. See the former verse. V. 11. “And God said. Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb yielding seed, and the fruit tree yielding fruit after its kind; whose seed is in itself upon the earth: ! and it was so." God provided away ’ whereby physical life could survive. Here again we see God's pur- i pose at work. '' V_ 12. “And the earth brought forth grass, and herb yielded seed • after his kind and the tree yielded fruit whose seed was in itself after its kind and God saw that it was good." The law qf self-pro-pagation was inaugurated in which ' the process of creation w-as to be continued. Man places one seed in the soil and God mulitiplies it many times. We need to praisel God for this and not take too ! much credit to ourselves in food production. V. 26. "And God said, Let ijs make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over t-he fish of the sea, and over the sow-1 of the air, and over ' -—2. —

the cattle and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth on the earth.” Note the use of the word “us'. The triune God was now' speaking. The highest creature was like God in that the image waa not a physical one. but mental, moral and spiritual likeness. Man was like God also in having dominion over all other physical beings. Here man was given the power to cjioose and direct, which called for a will all his own. Herein lies the significance of man. The same thought is repeated in the next verse. V. 28. “And God blessed them ano said unto them, Be fruitful and multiply replenish the earth and subdue It . . ,’’ Here is the history of man in a nutshell. Man is next to God in dominion and power. God trusted man and wooed mankind to trust him and love hi mand serve him. Discussion Questions on the Sunday chool Lesson. The Creation tory. for unday, October 7th. 1. How answer the question. Who made God? 2. What is eternity? 3. What proof is there that was a Creator? 4. Where in this lesson is taught the purpose of God? 5. What is meant by man having been created in the image of God? Clericus &ys: “The question naturally rises why did God create the universt. Human minds can never grasp the fulness of God’s purpose, but at least we know this worldis a stage upon which our lives are acted. It is a proving ground on which we are tested; it is a school in which we learn certain laws, which physical and spiritual. We have been given bodies and minds whereby we can accommodate ourselves to our physical surroundings. God has permitted us to have the power to choose i between the good and the evil.” t Lesson prayer: We are grateful to hare been created in the image of God. Forbid, O Lord, that we shonld allow that image to be marred by sin. We are thankful for. : thy perfect image in thy Son. our Lord. We praytha t the Soirtt t of : God may wbrk iji us to will and to do thy will by the transformation wrought by faith in Jesus Christ. FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH 221 South Fourth Street Stuart H.
