State Traffic Toll Above 1955 Figures Six Per Cent Ahead First Seven Months INDIANAPOLIS (UP) — Despite the fact Indiana’s 1956 traffic deatn toll ran six per cent ahead of the same period in 1955, deaths in four of the first seven months were fewer than the corresponding months last year. Indiana state police department summaries of traffic fatalities showed today that the safety record Hoosierland might have chalked up w*as blasted by what happened in January and June. In January, 103 were killed in Hoosier traffic, a total 27 per cent higher than the 81 deaths recorded in the corresponding month of 1955. There followed three months in which the deaths stayed barely below last year's levels-73 in February compared with 74, 85 in March compared .with 86, and 79 in April compared with 81. The May total of .91 was only one higher thaii May of 1955. Then came June, with almost a duplication of the January situation, in

June, 106 killed, compared with 88 a year earlier for a rise of 20 per cent. July’s toll of 91 was one below last year’s. The seven-month total was 628 compared with 592, a rise of six per cent. One of the most startling’observations in the summary was the predominance of fatal accidents caused by vehicles running off roadways. Collisions with other mo. tor vehicles prevailed as the No. 1 cause of traffic deaths. But in the seven-month period, 215 of 638 fatalities were listed in the “ran off roadway” category. That was an increase of 13 per cent gbove the seven-month figure in 1955. 0 o County Agent's Column Q n Fall Garden Work A little worlt in the home garden this fall will help to insure a good vegetable crop next summer. Rye will not only prevent Wind and water erosion but will give the gardener something green to look at during the bleak days of winter. j n addition, rye will add a good supply of organic material to the soil when plowed under next spring. Ward says that a good compost can be made from eprn stalks and vines taken from the garden and leaves removed from the iawp. He adds that it doesn’t take much space for a compost—a IQ feet x 10 feet area will hold a lot of compost material. If the gardener continues to add material and fertiliser (containing some nitrogen) to the compost from time to time, he will have a good source of mulching material within a year or so.
