Drake Is Arraigned For Bank Robberies Accused Os Staging Two Indiana Holdups INDIANAPOLIS (UP) — Roy Rudolph Drake, 33. accused of staging two Indiana beak holdups netting $33,000. today went before Federal Judge Cale J. Holder for arraignmeat. His Indianapolis attorneys, Earl J. Wynn and Herbert Hartman. Wednesday filed tor dismissal of the two indictments. They charged tht Drake’s rights were violated by confiscation of his assets and by bolding him in Evansville, about ISO miles away from legal advice. The motion said Drake’s righto under the fifth and sixth amendments to the constitution were violated by confiscation of $16,900 cash at the time of his arrest, July 30 in New Orleans. The money would be “sufficient" for Wynn and' Hartman's legal services, the attorneys said. They said his rights were violated because he was held in Vanderburgh county jail at Evansville. Drake la charged with the June 12 $66,000 robbery of the State Bank of Southport, second largest in Indiana history, and the $16,000 holdup of the Union Bank at Carmel last Sept. 16. Assistant U. Talmadge Wins In Georgia Primary Wins Democratic Senate Nomination ATLANTA (UP) — Horman Talmadge wop * Democratic nomlna tion to the U.S. senate today with « 4-to-l vWte Ma father, "old Gene” , wontd barb envied. Young Talmadge, former twoterm governor and erowd-swayer at 43, claimed the victory aa a “mandate" showing the nation that Georgia will fight for school segregation. Jlls battle cry of "save the states’ rights" won him a sweeping triumph over an old-time political foe, former acting Gov. M. E. Thompson, th a bid for the seat of retiring Sen. Waiter F. George. Returns from 1,320 of the state’s , 1,854 precincts gave Talmadge 387.093 popular votes and 390 in- , dicated county unit votes to 98,084 popular votes for Thompson. A total of 2M units was needed to win the nomination, which tn turn assures election in Democratic Georgia. Since Thompson was not leading in any county he had no Unit votes indicated. Pontius Funeral Services Saturday Ervin T. Pontine, 62. who resided four miles west of Geneva, was found dead on a sidewalk in Fort Wayne late Tuesday night.Police said there was no evidence of fonl play. Police also said Pontius .carried identification pipers stating he was an inspector for the Naval Material office in Fort Wayne. Surviving are the widow, Cleeta; hie mother, Mrs. Frank Pontills of Geneva, and an adopted daughter, Mrs. Kenneth McCroeky of Geneva. Funeral services will be held at 1 p. m. Saturday at the Hardy A Hardy funeral home in Geneva, with burial near Wakarusa. Friends may call SB the funeral home after 5 p. m. today. '» ~ Man Arrested For Public Intoxication Philip Haley, 45, of Portland was arrested today on U. S. highway 116 in Wabash township and charged with public intoxication. He was released after posting a >SO bond and will appear in city court Monday, Sept. 24. Military Damage On Okinawa $9 Million KADENA. Okinawa (UP)—The U. S. air force estimated today that typhoon Emma caused 34.3 million _to air force installation* on Okinawa. This brought total U.S. military damage to nearly 39 million.

Municipal League Hears Candidates Governor Nominees Speak At Opening INDIANAPOLIS (UP) — Addresses by the two nominees tor governor opened today’s meeting of the Indiana municipal league. Lt Gov. Harold Handley, Republican, and Mayor Ralph Tucker of Terre Haute, Democrat, highlighted the morning session. The two-day convention was slated to close late today with adoption of resolutions and election of officers. Mayor Robert Meyers of Fort Wayne, first vice president and presiding officer in the absence of Mayor Pater Mandlch of Gary, was expected to assume the presidency according to cuetom. Resolutions . discussed by the mayors Wednesday, faced little opposition. They included a 2-cent-a-gallon gas tax bike, a surtax on the gross income tax, a plan that the legislature enact no laws for municipal services without supplying funds, no state taxes on municipalities, allowing cities to inspect motor vehicles and collect for the service, greater home rule for cities, legislative reapportionment and league studies of municiapl salaries. In his keynote speech Wednesday, Meyers advocated "a serious study” of the gross income surtax. He said cities and towns tn the state faced a “desperate need” for additional funds. The proposed surtax was onefourth of 1 per cent on the 1 per cent gross income tex. A resolutions committee voted overwhelmingly for the measure. Dressy Fire TRENTON, N.
