Airlines To Promote Vacations In Europe
(Editor's Note: This is the last hi a series on a new campaign by the airlines to attract American tourists to Europe on a low-cost, short-time plan.) '■ , •• ..’ -J k By JACK V. FOX NEW YORK (X’P) - Whft does it cost to see Europe under the new low fare! two-wvek tour that goes into effect next month? Are there are a lot of “extras" that aren't covered in the list price? Let’s take one typical tour offered by Pan American World Airways. It takes 17 days overall and moves you through Rome. Nice, Paris and London. The basic price per person is 1670.40, Here is what you get for that: Transatlantic tourist flight in a DC7 with two meals each way. Drinks are on you. Double rooms with twin beds ip each stopping plate The hotels are not first class by American standards, but they are completely clean with adequate plumbing (sometimes down the hall) and good service. Hotel tips paid in advance except in England. Transportation within Europe - by train, bus and the various European airlines. Fare is paid from the hotels to and from air terminal within the city. It is not paid for transportation from the air terminal to and from the air-
port itself. A continental breakfaat (roll* and coffee) at all places. Lunch or dinner in Italy, but not in France or England. Sightseeing tours in and around the cities with English — speaking guides. That’s what is covered by the basic price. There are. of course, additional expenses. A passport costs $lO, a slff,6oo Insurance policy covering the entire period costs about • SB. The Required smallpox inoculation costs $6. There is the transportation from your hometown to and from New York City. In Europe you pay for most of your lunches and dinners. There you are on your own. You can get an excellent lunch of spaghetti atid wine on a terrace jutting into the Mediterranean for sl. Or you can go to Maxim's in Paris and spend S2O very easily for dinner. The American with the will to hold down his appetite and drinks can dine well on $5 a day. There are such incidentals as laundry and dry cleaning, occasional taxis, an airport tax in Paris ($1.30), tips outside the hotels. But one of the fine things about Europe is that many of the best things are free—or so cheap as to be almost so. You can sit In a case
