Custody has been granted to Robert Brown. Interrogation Filed Oscar Ray, defendant in a complaint for damages by Mary S. Bailey, administratrix of the Peter D. Estate Cases The inventory for the estate of Jesse Elmer Eckrote has been filed and approved. Three Fined Here On Traffic Counts Four persons appeared in justice of the peace Floyd Hunter’s court Friday night on traffic charges. Garland V. West, of Portland, entered a plea of not guilty to speeding and his trial was set for a later date. He posted a 315 bond. Michael Jackson, of Grand Rapids, Mich., arrested for speeding, was fined 31 and costs. Also fined 31 and costs for speeding was Fred R. Hoffman of Decatur. Ronald K. Gerber To Open New Market Next Friday Supermarket To Open Friday On Highway Gerber’s Super Market, a complete one-stop grocery store, located in a new building on U. S. highways 27 and 33, will be opened to the public next Friday, it was announced today by Carl Gerber, long time Decatur grocery and meat market operator. The new supermarket will be operated by Gerber, vvho will have charge of the meat and meat processing departments; George Ditto, who will have charge of the grocery department, and Dale Liby, who will supervise the purchase of meat and poultry for the new store. Entirely home owned and home operated, the new grocery will be complete in every detail. With parking space for more than 50 automobiles, the building is located on a large tract of ground, directly south of Miller’s Motel. The building is 60 by 100 feet and has more than 7,100 feet of floor space. Three automatic check - out stands have been installed, with ample space to insure quick service. There is a frozen food department. with 30 feet of refrigeration and a poultry department with 24 feet of cold storage space. The entire building is air conditioned and a blow-type heating system will add to the comfort of shoppers in the winter months. • About half of the building will be used for canned goods, baked
PROCLAMATION Mayor Robert Cole has proclaimed next week, Sept. 15 to 23, as soft water week In Decatur. The text of the Mayor’s proclamation follows: WHEREAS, the water conditioning industry has combined with modern science in a continuing program of research into the effects and acknowledged importance of water on our everyday lives; and , ' ‘ W’HEREAS, the iidustry has prpved through scientific methods and experimentation that definite and tremendously important advantages exist in the use of soft water in the home, in commercial businesses, and in industry; and WHEREAS, today over four million families in the United States. Hcluding many in Decatur, benefit by the use of soft water in their homes largely because of this concerted scientific study; / NOW, THEREFORE, I, ROBERT COLE, Mayor of the city of / Decatur, in the state of Indiana, do hereby designate the week of September 15 to 23 as Soft Water Week in Decatur and call upon the citizens of Decatur to cooperate in the appropriate observance thereof. The meat department, which will feature Adams county raised and home slaughtered livestock, will be one of the largest in the area. A 24-foot self-service department has been erected and in addition to this, there is a 20-foot counter where customers may purchase all types of special cuts and grades of meat they desire. The rear of the building is reserved for storage and there is a large space for canned goods reserve. A below-zero freezing department for meat and a large cooler house for poultry are features of the new establishment. At the check-out counters, new automatic National cash register units are being installed. These

units have the latest type counters and checkers to make it almost impossible for a check-out cashier to make an error. Formal opening of the new market will be held the latter part of September, Gerber announced, but all departments of the store will be open for business next Friday morning. Farmer Found Dead Beside His Tractor COLUMBUS, Ind. (UP) — Walter Ropp, 72, Hope, was found dead Friday night .beside his farm trac--tor in a field where he was mowing. Authorities believed Ropp steered the tractor beneath lowhanging tree limbs and that they brushed him off the tractor seat. They believed Ropp’s head hit the tractor as he fell.
