Confused Fireman Blamed For Wreck Threw Switch Too Soon, 20 Killed SPRINGER. N. M. (UP) — Santa Fe Railroad officials said Wednesday night that a confuted fireman threw a switch at the wrong time, sending the- x crack •'Chief’ smashing into a mail and express train and killing SO persons. T. J. Anderson. Santa Fe’s assistant general manager, said the fireman became confused and threw the switch too soon. The passenger train, which should have sped past the waiting mail train, instead roared onto the siding and hit the sidetracked train head-on. Twelve persons were taken to hospitals and one was in-‘-■jured seriously in the pre-dawn amashup Wednesday. A coroners inquest into the deaths was scheduled for today. Workers found the 20th body in the wreckage of the two Santa Fe trains just before dark Wednesday. more than 15 hours after the collision on a siding south jof Springer. The last body found was that of a Santa Fe employe. Lawrence McCormick, of Raton. N. M., who had been off duty and was traveling to catch his regular run. Bulldozers pushed the wreckage to one side and other trains were ’ able to pass through by Wednesday afternoon. AH the dead were Santa Fe employes. but only one was on the mail train — engineer L. J. Rush of ißaton. The others were personnel from the Chief, including engineer E. O. Foster of Raton. Therefore, it was not known that he was among the dead until the wreckage was combed. Eight of the injured were treated at Colfax county hospital and released. Four were hospitalized, hut only James E. Wolter of Rockford, 111., a dining car worker, was in serious condition. Santa Fe officials said it was “coincidental” that only crew members and no passengers, were killed. Most of the passengers and off duty crew members were asleep at the time of the accident. The collision demolished the locomotive units of both trains and four cars of the Chief, including
a barrage car. the dormitory car and two pullmans. The dining and lounge cars of the plush streamliner were derailed, hut did not overturn. ■— ——--i*,-'---Most of the bodies were found tn the crew’s dormitory car. Charles Kincaid, a brakeman on the Chief and a resident of Alhuquerque, N. M.. said he was standing tn the vestibule of one of the pulltnans when the trains hit. “I opened the upper half of the vestibule window to see if train number eiglit (the mail train) had any signals for us as we passed. I never did see the train ... I don’t remember much until I got to the hospital.’’ Guardsmen Return From 11-Week Course Twenty Indiana air national guardsmen have returned to their homes in Decatur and Fort Wayne after completing an 11-week air force basic training course at Sheppard air force base! Thby returned home last week by train. — Local Lady's Mother Is Taken By Death Mrs. Russell Hays, 52, of Hagers town, mother of Mrs. Gene Rash of this city, died Saturday noon in Hagerstown after suffering a heart attack. Death was- instantaneous. Surviving in addition to Mrs. Rash are the husband; son. Richard Hays of Selma; another daughter, Mrs.- Philip Cross of Hagerstown, and seven granddaughtersFuneral services were conducted Tuesday afternoon at the home in Hagerstown, with the Rev. Such a ineal can be prepared by using a breast of veal.. Here’s a recipe recommended by the A & P Service for Homemakers. Cook together 1 medium onion, a few celery leaves in 2 of fat for 5 minutes. Then add teaspoon marjoram, a pinch of thyme, %-teaspoon salt, %-cup water. Mix th® foregoing with 2 cups of stale bread crumbs. . i With this stuffing placed In a pocket in a 2%-pound piece of veal breast, roll and fasten with skewers or lace with string. Place this on rack in a baking pan. sprinkle with salt, pepper and paprika, and roast at about 325 degrees for two hours. At the end of the first hour, add 4 halved medium potatoes, Add a little water during roasting if necessary. When meat is done add a little water to drippings in pan, thicken with flour and pour over meat. An excellent vegetable to go'Yith such a main dish is cauliflower. Wash the cauliflower, break in flowerets and cook in ..boiling salt water until tender. Drain and add two tablespopns margarine, chopped parsley and salt and pepper to taste. Cranberry sauce also will go well. To prepare this chill a 7-ounce can of cranberry kauce and serv'd. * For dessert try this pudding. Prepare 1 box butterscotch pudding according to directions using diluted evaporated milk. Cool, serve in dessert dishes with sprinkling of plain or toasted coconut
New Haven Pilot Is Dead In Navy Crash Richard Mattingly , Dies In Air Crash WINTON. N. C. (UP) -The navy searched swampland along the Chowan River today for the bodies of two navy pitots killed in the collision of their jet fighters. A spokesman at the Oceana, Va., naval auxiliary air station identified the victims as 'Lt. Donaid E. Schuh, 25, Syracuse, N.Y,, and Ens. Richard G. Mattingly, 23. New Haven, Ind. The two F9F Cougar jets exploded on collision, scattering wreckage over a heavily wooded swampland. Navy, marine aid coast guard personnel blocked off the area and began a search for the bodies. Ensign Mattingly graduated from the New Haven high school and was a member of St, John's -Catholic church at New Haven. He is survived by his parents. Mr. and Mrs. John Mattingly. New Haven; twin brothers, Robert and William, at home, and the paternal grandfather. August Mattingly, New Haven. The body will be returned to the E. Harper & Son funeral home at New Haven. Germany (UP) — Sgt 1-c Goodpaster Henry, 24, Indianapolis, was beaten to death with a trench shovel in the U.S. army barracks here Saturday night, authorities sevealed today. The internal revenue service reported today it collected a near-record 10 billion dollars in excise taxes' last year. The treasury expects excise i taxes to bring in about SIO,BOO.- > 000,000 this year for the fiscal year ending Jund 39, 1957. The record year for excise taxes—covering items ranging from i cigarets and gasoline to automobiles and fishing rods—was 1953. The revenue service collected >10,337.401,000 that year. Contact Committee At State Capital Meet With Industry On Locating Plant A Chamber of Commerce industrial Contact committee went to Indianapolis today to confer with officials of an industry on the possibility of locating in Decatur. The delegation included Robert. Tracey, chairman of the retail] division of the Chamber of Commerce; Jack Gordon, a member of the industrial promotion committee. and Fred Kolter, executive secretary of the Chamber. The committee is visiting the Indianapolis firm in answer to an inquiry about locating a factory here which would employ about 75 semi-skilled workers.
