I & M Plans Huge Generating Plant 58 Millon Dollar Terre Haute Plant FORT WAYNE (UP) — The Indiana and Michigan Electric Co. said today ita huge, 58 million dollar electric power plant to bd built along the Wabash River south of Terre Haute will bouse the world's largest generating unit. The plant, with a generating capacity of 450,00 kilowatts, will be fed by its own coal mine. It* is the first of two major projects planned in the seven-state American Gas and Co. system of which Indiana and Michigan Electric is a major part. Philip Sporn, president of the utility, hailed the generating unit "as a new plateau in power generating technology.” He said it would be capable of supplying the residential electric requirements of a city of four million persons. The plant will be 73 per cent larger than any unit operating today, officials said. ~ Construction will be started “In the very near future,” said Sporn. Completion was slated for late 1958. The mine will be developed by Ayrshire Collieries, Corp., Indianapolis. and will be connected with the power station by a private 6mile railroad, also owned and operated by Ayrshire. Cost of the mine and railroad was estimated at more than 4 million dollars. James W. Morgan of Ayrshire said work on the mine and railroad will be started before the end of the year, with first coal delivery scheduled for late 1958. The project will be located in Fairbanks Twp., Sullivan county, about 20 miles southwest of Terre Haute. Spokesmen said it was chosen primarily because of its abundant water and coal supplies. Indianapolis Youth Dies In Collision MOORESVILLE, Ind. (UP) — Tony Comer, 14, Indianapolis, Was killed Tuesday when a jeep collided with a truck at a county road junction three miles east of here.
