I OB Creamed Comments on the Sunday School Lesson. The Royal Law of Love, James 2:1-13, for Sunday.Sunday. September 2. — The Rev. I). Carl Yoder. The royal law of love is exemplified in democracy in Christian fellowship. For this the gospel stands. True felowship springs from a heart of ove for a others without any diacrimiaatiea. V. 1. “My brethren, have not the faith of the Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of gory, with respect of persons.” The appieation of reigion caed “the faith” does not toerate spdcia respect for specia peope. Herein les the gory of Christ, who came to save the word and who wecomes any one. To fai at this point give# comnintsm an advantage. Segregation is the ive sbject with a. V. . "For if there come nto yor assemby a man with a god ring, in goody appare. and there come in aso a man iu vie raiment;” Two extreme cases are given, a others incded between these extremes. James may have thoght of the rich man and Lazars in one of Jesus' parables. Too much attention to 1 the man of wealth and too little attention to those in extreme poverty is still too evident. V. 3. “And ye have respect to him that weareth gay clothing, and say unto him. Sit here in a good place; and say to the poor. Stand thou there, or sit here under my footstool.” Real Christianity is democratic at the core. Here is the question of free pews in the church; it involves welcome association with all in all walks of life. V. 4. “Are ye not then partial ini yourselves, and are becomes judges 1 of evil thoughts?" Unchristian! thoughts entertained will be ex-! pressed in corresponding deeds. Sin j is not so much In the evil deed as' iu the who thinks ill of another. | ‘Hearken, my -beloved hret.’ thren. Hath not God the poor' Os this world rich in faith gnd heirs ■ of the kingdom which be bath prom-' teed to the mthat love him?” To discriminate against people is, going against God’s will, A true Christian makes God’s will supreme. V. 6. "But ye have despised the ■ poor? Do not rich men oppress you , and draw y6u before the judgment seats?” Rich men are in position to hire the most able legal help an dthus to depress the helpless poor. V. 7. “Do they not blaspheme that ’ worthy name whereby we are called?” The Roman tyrannies and the Jewish tyrannies were expressed in at least ten outstanding persecutions of the Christians during the first three centuries. The history of the Christian church is filled with many persecutions. His lory has repeated itself during the two world wars with a continuation to the present. Our hope is in God who will not be defeated. V. 8. “If we fulfill the royal lawaccording to the scripture. Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself, ye * do”well.” James refers to the supreme sovereignty of God who is love, and to the law of love which is the essence of all law. V. 9. “But if ye have respect to persdne, ye commit sin and are convinced of the law of transgressors.” Any thing less than love as a motive of life is a sin. V. ID. “For whosoever shall keep the whole law and yet offend in one point is guilty of all.” Sin can not be covered by many good

works. Cbriat demands complete obedience, a complete dedication to the will of God. There is no Christian sneak. This thought is emphasized in the following verse. V. 1. “So speak ye and do. as they that shall be judged by the Ihw of liberty." The law of liberty differs from the royal law of love in that the law of liberty introduces the element of mercy and puts in contrast judgment. Those who confess their sins and walk in the light will find mercy with God. Those who lack the spirit of love are destined to Judgment. This thought is reinforced in the following verse. When the love of God reigns in the soul, the mercy of God turns aside Rod’s judgment on an unforgiven sinner. —Based on copyrighted outlines produced by the Division of Christian Education. These facts were pointed out at UNESCO's exhibit at UN headquarters last month. Drake University Divinity School recently dedicated a circular chapel. The inly light streams down through a round skylight in the center of the dome upon the altar. I which rests upon a raised dais in the center of the sphere. All worshipers face toward the center | of the chapel. It is felt that thus i a sense of unity and equality is created. ~ ’ ’ Lutherans have appointed a seci retary for intercultural outreach •j to study -cultural groups in America i not now formally reached by the j church. Results will be relayed to local congregations and church boards. Dr. R. Paul Caudill, pastor of the First Church, Memphis, Tenn., and member of the executive committee of the Baptist World Alliance, j will preach in five Russian cities ( this summer. The Russian visit will be part of a speaking tour that also will take him to Finland and Africa. He speaks at the celebration marking the 100th anniversary of : the Baptists of Finland. The Methodist Church, at its General Conference, asked other Christians to join It to make 1957 “the greatest year of prayer for peace, for brotherhood and for personal commintment to God that this world has ever known.” The conference also called upon the church to reaffirm its faith in the efficacy of individual prayer and in the power of united prayer of persons devoted to the will of God. In addition, all Methodists were urged “to cultivate the prayer habit until prayer becomes natural to them and they pray without ceasing.” If we are willing to adopt New Testament methods, we will get New Testament results. <— Kauffman. The deepest problem is not to add years to our life, but to add life to our years. •A lot of Christians are “missing in action.”

Ths Church Invites You Much is said about freedom and liberty. We claim thaj, in war we are fighting for frifedom and that we, with others, are as “free nations." The Key to Peace As fast as nations are declaring their independence, that fast is the world moving to world peace. The crux of a backward nation attaining its right to be a nation is in the fact that the people are being heard and the old dictum that the government of a nation depends upon the governed is being realized. - , David Lawrence says. “This is another way of saying that the peoples of the Soviet Union and satellite states hold the key, to peace. They must be persuaded to choose a free government. It’s truly the only thing that can make the world safe for the continuance of democratic government anywhere.
