Hurricane Is Heading Away From Florida Betsy Heading For Open Seas But Coast Area Put On Alert killer hurricane that swerved to the north just as Florida battened down for its fury, churned' Atlantic waters today, heading for open seas but threatening the east coast 200 miles away. The small, but powerful storm roared along a path almost paraj* lei to the U. S. coastline and weathermen said prevailing winds would probably guide the tempest to an ignoinious death in the open Atlantic to .the north. In a 3 a.m. (EDT) bulletin, the Miami weather bureau centered the stormsome2lornileseast of Melbourne. Fla. It was reported moving north northwest at about nine ■miles an hour and packing top winds of 120 miles an hour. Hurricane warnings fluttered from Vero Beach, Fla., to Brunswick. Ga.. and coastal residents in Georgia and the Carolinas hastily' battened down in anticipation of a possible change in the storm's course. Betsy, which took seven lives and caused millions .of dollars worth of damage as it slammed across the West Indies. Puerto Rico and the Bahamas, had held an unswerving course toward Florida until late Tuesday when it suddenly slowed and lumbered to a more northerly path.
Although the Georgia and Carolina coastlines sOll lie to the north of Betsy, weather forecasters predict that barring another change in direction. Betsy will not strike the U. S. mainland. Chief Miami forecaster Gordon Dunn said that a high level ".trough" some 25,000 to 30,000 feet in the air was pulling the storm toward the north and a flow of upper air currents were also steering the winds away from the coast. Automobile Hood Is Damaged By Bottle A report of yaiidalisni was made to city police early this morning by Dan Thomks of Decatur. Thomas stated that, someone threw a beer bottle at his car, which was parked at 222 South Third street The hood was damaged, according to the report. A theft was reported to the police department Tuesday Wilbur Lough of Decatur told police that someone stole an army uniform out of his car sometime Monday night.
