Nixon Backers Less Worried Over Move Easy Renomination Os Nixon Foreseen SAN FRANCISCO (UP)' — The OOP's top party strategists appeared nwe optimistic than ever today about solving easily their biggest possible convention headache—Harold E. fetassen's effort to dump Vice President Richard M. Nixon from the ticket. Sources close to the vice presi-. dent and also important in the Republican convention planning said they were “not worried" and that neither was Nixon. Even with Stassen moving West to set up shop here with his campaign. Nixon’s key b>ic.<»rs in party ranks showed'less concern than a week ago. Despite occasional spu>terin«s In behalf of other possible vice P’tsldential nominee j, they appeared to have increased confidence that Nixon can be renominated easily with a minimum of controversy. There also was open joy in GOP high places over former President Truman's latest blast at Adlai E. Stevenson tn Chicago. Obviously enjoying the Democrats’ troubles. GOP national chairman Leonard W. Hall set the tone for the Republican comments op Mir. Truman’s statement that Stevenson could not defeat President Eisenhower. Hall said the former President could have said that about "anybody they nominate.” In otjher pre-convention GOP developments: Harry Finks, a California delegate and a vice president of the State Federation of Labor, said the Republicans "absolutely cannot win with Nixon on the ticket." Finks said he will work to replace Nixon with Gov. Goodwin J. Knight of California. Knight has said he is not a candidate but is "available.” And he has not flatly endorsed Nixon. A rules subcommittee thumbed down a proposal to speed up convention proceedings by dominating the public polling of delegations. It voted to keep on with the old system of time-consuming, but televised, calling of each delegate’s name when a delegation poll is demanded. about one-third since the 1855 harvest. Wood products treated with preservatives increased three per cent in 1986.
