Humphrey Urging More To Announce Urges Second Place Candidates Announce WASHINGTON (UP) — Sen. Hubert H. Humphrey wants other Democrats who would like to be vice president to follow bis lead and formally announce their candidacies for the nomination. Humphrey said Sunday that selection of vice presidential candidates should be taken out of “smoke-filled rooms.” The Minnesota senator broke political tradition last week by announcing that he would like to win second place on the Democratic ticket next fall. He said that if other candidates would do likewise “it would be good for the party and a new experience in American politics.” Humphrey said the vice presidency should be "as fully and openly discussed, considered and sought for as a seat in congress." He said the vice presidency itself has taken on considerable importance in recent years. He noted that the vice president is now a member of the national security council, charged with the nation’s safety. The idea that vice presidents shoMjd be Mtegted by a few party leaders in tnelegendery smokefind * room is “a hangover from the mid- Nineteenth Century,” Humphrey said.
