This is another fine public service of an Adams county group strictly for the benefit of the public. . • —-o 0 —~ The Indiana Park and Recreation Association has published a new 1956 directory and it is interesting to learn of the many facilities tor recreation provided by our state. Eighteen state parks with a wide variety of types of recraationr-from archery to wildlife exhibits—are listed. Various kinds of accommodations include camping, trailer areas, tons and cabins, which make it possible for the average Hoosier to vacation at home. Wandering around these United States some of us overlook some of the scenic spots near home. While Indiana has not yet become a major tourist at- » traeticii, there are many places which we could well afford to visit. > o_— Inadequate absorbent cover is said to be one of the reasons for our failure to- hold an adequate amoun; of water. Others tie in the recession of the polar ice caps and subsequent -changes in thermal currents which lower the precipitation rate. Whatever the causes may be. there is need for an assured supnly Os water. Perhaps those who recommend a dam on thq St. Marys river may have a good Idea to help solve our local problem. An extensive reservoir could result and a treatment plant wou'd insure a good reserve of water for Decatur. " 7 0 o ♦ . Small world, Isn’t it, when such a remote spot on the map can reach into our own locality? o o— — — The death of Archbishop John Francis Noll 13 deeply regretted by all w ho were aware of his kind benevolences. Ho was especially known for his prominent work in founding both the Legion of Decency and Our Sunday Visitor. The latter has become the most widely circulated newspaper of its kind In the world, and the Legion has certainly done a great job in ihe area of censorship. Friendly and well known to the lai*y of all creeds. Archbishop Noll did much for the Christian faith. Our acquaintanceship with men who knew him has enabled us to have a keener understanding of the true Christian principles for which he lived. The Archbii.hop has visited here on many occasions and all Decatur peoule who had an opportunity to know him were of one voice, "A great, man, a greater Christian?’ o o . With another Little League season completed, those in charge can lock bach with a deep satisfaction The 6-team league gave many boys a chance to take part in a competitive game and at the sama time to learn some of the baric principles of life. Winning and losing is r part of each adult life and those who are best able to meet such circumstances will take the problems Os every day living in stride. The overall total of 10 teams, which included the morning league teams, pretty well encompassed alt boys who wanted to play ball. Excellent leadership and direction contributed much toward making this the best season thus far in the youngsters’ baseball-program. Congratulations to ail who contributed so much for so many.

Stevenson's Initial Ballot Total Near 500 Headquarters Claim A Minimum Os 600 First Ballot Votes WASHINGTON (UP)—Adlai E. Stevenson's first ballot strength climbed toward the 500 mark today and potentially 200 more early ballot votes could be seen tor him among favorite son and uncommitted delegations. To win the Democratic presidential nomination, Stevenson or the man who beats him must poll at lekst 686% votes at the Democratic national convention. Stevenson's campaign headquarters already claimed a minimum of 600 first ballot and said that almost any two of the large state delegations which are uncommitted or pledged to favorite son candidates could throw the nomination to Stevenson. The withdrawal of Sen. Estes Kefauver Tuesday in favor of Stevenson gave the Stevenson campaign its biggest lift since' the California primary. Gov. Averell Harriman's managers still talked of getting a substantial bloc of the Kefauver voles, but a bandwagon swing to Stevenson seemed to under way. Former Democratic national chairman Frank McKinney, a Harriman supporter, predicted the New Yorker will poll 450 first ballot votes. A United Press tabulation of known first ballot preferences showed Stevenson with 485% votes against 166% for Harriman. A still-incomplete resurvey of the Kefauver delegates shifted at least 20 of the 26 Indiana votes from Kefauver to Stevenson and al) 18 of those from Maryland. Kefauver had wpn both delegations in uncontested primaries. In Minnesota, where Kefauver defeated Stevenson in a March primary, Harriman picked up 8% of Kefauver’g 26 votes and Stevenson 6% with the remainder undecided. Ten and one-half scattered Kefauver votes in states, were transferred to Harriman arid 16% to Stevenson. ‘ More than half of the 28 Kefauver votes from Wisconsin were expected to jump to. .Stevenson. in aa unoontested primary. The Kefauvef withdrawal looked like the move which could throw the nomination to Stevenson if the party does not tear itself apart at Chicago in its quadrennial fight over a civil rights plank to the platform. Much of Stevenson’s strength lies to the south, which can still explode over the racial Issue in the platform.
