Force Airmen Live In Plywood Huts Air Base Scandals Force Conditions WASHINGTON (UP) — Sen. Henry M Jacksen (D-Wash.) disclosed today that the 1951 North African air base scandals forced U. S. airmen to live In flimsy plywood huta and lack of funds has kept them there. Jackson made public a letter from n top air force official which said some new housing — though not enough — is planned or under construction. The letter, front air force undersecretary James if. Douglas, primarily concerned the big supply base at Nouassevr, French Morocco whose commanding general recently told United Press that housing for his men “stinks.” But Douglas said his report applied in general to the whole network of U. S. bases in French Morocco. Jackson asked the air force for a report on Nottasseur after reading the United Press dispatch. With the outliieSk of the Korean War. the air force began a "crash" program to build bases in Morocco. The emphasis was on speed, and never mind the dollars. But construction costs ran so high that to get urgently needed runways for the bus*. the air force had to toss in part of the money it had. earmarked for housing. The construction scandals Interred to a senate "investigation
